"MSVCR80.dll Missing"

iTunes no longer starts on my PC the message is: this program cannot start "MSVCR80.dll Missing". This program has operated well for months and I have made no alterations other than attempting to install the latest update, what should I do?

Windows 7

sarahkitten,

When you do this again, can you check that the uninstall doesn't leave anything behind in the Program Files/iTunes or Program Files/Common Files/Apple folders? Make sure that the Apple Mobile Device and iPod Services are not running. (Your library and media files should be kept in your music folder and should not be affected by this.)

Check to see what other programs you're running during the install -- Outlook, IE, FireFox.

Something is making the iTunes installer cranky so that it's not laying down all the new files / deleting all the old ones and I'm trying to figure out what it is.

Thanks

Thank you to Octacon72, I have Windows XP. Had to remove the Apple accounts that you listed. Reboot, When I went to re-install itunes - itunes window had option of removing or repairing itunes. Repair did not work. Had to choose REMOVE itunes, reboot then install itunes. All of my music and playlist were there! Thanks again for posting!

I would not claim that the reboot was necessary because I don't know. I just thought I may as well do that since I had a failed installation and then uninstalled all Apple software and a reboot takes 15 seconds for me. I didn't have to stop any services manually.

Off topic: I don't understand why the latest iTunes installer is about 50 megabytes larger than the previous version's.
