"MSVCR80.dll Missing"

iTunes no longer starts on my PC the message is: this program cannot start "MSVCR80.dll Missing". This program has operated well for months and I have made no alterations other than attempting to install the latest update, what should I do?

Windows 7

tt2, you seen to be the person Apple has in charge here and you have done a great job. But tell me, even after all the mess Apple is still pushing update 11.1.4.

Has this update been FIXED? Is it SAFE to do a NORMAL install on all Windows systems?

Thanks

I'm just a fellow iTunes user. People generally come to the forums when they have a problem so while the volume of traffic on post-upgrade woes is unusually high there is no clue as to number of trouble-free installations happening alongside it. Of five machines I updated one had a problem. I'm taking a few days off from work but if any of my colleagues had had a problem I would have heard about it as I am the IT dept. there.

I suspect the reasons for failures of this update are various. At least one involves an update to a DLL file which works without a hitch unless you had made a copy of an older version of the DLL in your iTunes folder as an unofficial workaround to a different problem in the past. This is covered in the first box in Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates. If you have that launch error there is usually no need to tear down iTunes to fix it. I don't know how Apple are doing but I'm tracking the possibility that screen resolution and font scaling might be the factor in a small group of cases.

For most people if iTunes does not install correctly, completely uninstalling iTunes and its supporting components in the way set out in my tip will get iTunes working again. If that process still doesn't work then it is possible to install individual components and log the installation with a view to tracking down the specific cause of the failure. I will update my tip as and when information comes to light.
