Aperture rebuilding versions and restoring faces after every start up

So to problem number 2... Aperture now says the library is from an earlier version of Aperture so it won't open it. The library does open in iPhoto but I dont think all the versions are included in there.

If the library has been created by an older version of Aperture, you cannot open it by "File > Switch to Library" from within Aperture. You have to open it directly by selecting it in the Finder and double-clicking it. Then will Aperture upgrade it to the current version, before opening it.

If you need to trouble shoot the library, because there is a cuppruption, make sure your backup of the library is current.

My Aperture Library does this on every start up and seems to hang on certain versions when doing so.

This may also be caused by a corruption of the internal databases, not only corrupted image versions. Then Repairing or rebuilding the library might help. Try first the First Aid Tools, if you have not already done so, see this link: Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library: Aperture 3 User Manual

To check for corrupted image versions: Try to discover the filenames of the version that are causing this and delete these versions from the library. If you are lucky, you can see this in the Activity Window (Aperture main menu bar > Wndow > Show Activity")

If Aperture is hanging and crashing, before you can get to the Activity Window, have a look at my User Tip and try to search for the versions systematically.

Rebuilding can take a very long time, hours for a large library. Let it run.

A bit of voodoo which I follow when I have seemingly intractable problems involving Aperture crashes.

Generally: boot into Safe Mode. Reboot. Repair Library permissions. Reboot. Repair (or rebuild) Library. Close. Reboot. Open Library and _do nothing at all_ while Aperture runs for several hours. Close. Reboot.

Since you are in the middle of a rebuild, try the following:

After the rebuild finishes, close Aperture without doing anything else. Then reboot into Safe Mode. Open _a different or new Library_. Reboot into regular mode. Then open your Library, and let Aperture run unmolested overnight (don't let the machine go to sleep -- blanking the screen is OK).

Then close the Library. Then repair permissions.

All of the above assumes a healthy and up-to-date system. You might want to repair system permission or run disk repair as well.

As with anything done on a computer, you should never use a file without have a back-up.

Yes. The first step in the standard Aperture trouble-shooting. "Repair system permissions" is done with Disk Utility. "Several hours" is 8-12.

Note that this won't remove any corrupt files in your Library. But it should give you a healthy enough Library that you can then start the process of identifying and isolating corrupt files.

All this is _subordinate to_ whatever Léonie recommends. What's voodoo for me is science for her. 🙂 .

What kind of external drive is your Aperture library on? Is it correctly formatted MacOS X Extended (Journaled)?

- Looking up places for photos 0 remaining. This task can't be paused or cancelled. As I was looking at this window Aperture crashed. Would the report be any help to you?

Have you saved the crash log? Then post the first 50 lines, please. I am not sure, if it will tell us anything, but it might be a well-known error.

Were you connected to the Internet, when the Places error happenend? Places requires a working internet connection.

And trust Kirby's voodoo. He has experience with gigantic libraries.

Do you have any idea why the First Aid Dialogue box won't appear when following your previous instructions? It goes straight into Rebuilding Library. Thanks again

That could indicate the library still has not been upgraded successfully to Aperture 3.5.1. When Aperture tries to open a library, that has been created by a previous version, it will convert it by importing it into a new, empty library. And maybe showing as rebuilding (I suspect). What is the library version, that you are seeng, when using "File > Get info" on the library in the Finder?

You should be seeing a panel similar to this, if you double click a library while holding down ⌥⌘ firmly, until the panel appears.

To find your crashlog, you could open the Consol.app (in Applications > Utilities.) From the Sidebar you can access all saved logs. apertur elogs will probably in the "system Diagnostics" section.

Ctrl-click any recent log that might relate to Aperture and is a crash, not a hang.
