Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)

Remove all of these items in the following order:

  • iTunes
  • Apple Software Update
  • Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall move on to the next item)
  • Bonjour
  • Apple Application Support

Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.

The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.

Please note:

Some users may need to follow all the steps in whichever of the following support documents applies to their system. These include some additional manual file and folder deletions not mentioned above.

HT1923: Removing and reinstalling iTunes for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8

Thanks so much to turingtest2 had same problem and his solution worked for me too. I did hot another problem doing the uninstall was getting error saying that uninstaller could not open Install Log File. Turns out to be Microsoft problem see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2564571. Solution is to stop and start explorer.exe in Task Manager. Sounds weird but it worked.🙂

Apple have released a new support article regarding the issue. I've a link to it and some additional advice here:

Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for WIndows updates

I'm currently running experiments with the official advice to see if there are any surprises. In the meantime what have you tried so far? Have you been able to remove all the iTunes components and clean the suggested folders?

There was one folder I wasn't able to remove manually. I don't remeber which one at the moment. It told me I needed permission to delete that folder. That's another thing I don't understand. I have administrator rights on this machine and I still get the permission error. In other forums it has suggested running registry cleaners, so I treid that and it did nothing. I'm on windows vista home premium by the way. Not sure if that makes any difference. I'll check out that article.

I'm still doing some more research, but if you have any software that enables AirPrinting for printers that don't do it that probably connects to Bonjour and will need to be removed. Apple's official advice makes no mention of the iCloud or MobileMe control panels. Each may be running services and so may block attempts to remove folders.
