Do the following:

  • Uninstall from Windows the following four programs: iTunes, Apple Software Update, Apple Mobile Device Support, Bonjour and Apple Application Support. You do this from an applet in Control Panel called Programs & Features (in Windows 8, 7, or Vista) or Add or Remove Programs (in Windows XP).
  • Download the latest version of iTunes from Apple and note the location you're saving it to so you can find it once it's done.
  • Run the iTunes installation as an administrator, just Right click iTunes installer and Run as Administrator.

Install as admin and a reboot after uninstall seem te be necesarry for some people.

I am admin so that was no issue for me.
And a reboot wasn't necessary on my Vista and Win7 systems.
Just uninstall everything Apple (linked to iTunes) and reinstall iTunes.

In my opinion people who have the most problems solving the issue don't use a registry cleaner.
If you keep your registry clean you are less likely to have issues.

had problems with update 11.1.4. Did the download only option which was suggested when problem occurred. ran intunes installer by itself. still didn't work so followed instructions here to uninstall from windows itunes, apple software update, apple mobile device support, bonjour and apple application support in that order. apple mobile deive support did not uninstall. downloaded latest version of itunes from apple. restarted computer and installed the new downloaded version which installed fine. however, now when try to start itunes, the message Itunes LibrARY.ITL CANNOT BE READ BECAUSE IT WAS CREATED BY A NEWER VERSION OF ITUNES. Now what do I do? I assume this is result of running itunes installer from download only.
