Cannot open Numbers spreadsheet on Mac, but can on iPhone, iPad and in iCloud. Any ideas?

I have created a spreadsheet in Numbers on my iPhone. I can open and edit it on my iPad and in Numbers on iCloud. However, I get an error whenever I try to open it from iCloud in Numbers on my MacBook Pro. Any ideas? The error I get is "The file xxxx.numbers couldn't be opened."

Thanks a million. This worked for me!

However, I had to reboot the Mac before trying to open Pages again. Trying to open the iCloud synced apps before a reboot caused the spinning beachball of death.

I had the same problem. Solution was very simple, however i needed a lot of time to find it.

It turned out that document in Mac Numbers was in "Print" mode ("Print" and "Done" button visible at the bottom of right toolbar).

I just had to click "Done"!
