7th Generation iPod Nano will not connect to iTunes after iTunes 11.1.4.62 update

I updated iTunes to the 11.1.4.62 version last night. Now, when I connect my iPod Nano 7th gen device, iTunes gives me a message stating that an iPod has been connected but could not be indentifed properly, try reconnecting, unistall then reinstall iTunes, blah blah. Tried all that and none of it works. iPod worked fine on this computer on iTunes until this update. Windows 8.1 system.

What I did to keep my Library intact was this: before uninstalling iTunes (plus Bonjour, Apple Application Support, Apple Mobile Device Support and Apple Software Update) I backed up the entire content of my Music folder to an external hard drive. I copied everything, including subfolders such as iTunes, Playlists, Podcasts etc.

I then uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes and before importing my library to the new version, I deleted everything in my Music folder and replaced it with the back-up copy. I then opened iTunes > Preferences > Advanced and changed the iTunes Media Folder Location to C:\Users\Mariko\Music. I then imported my library into iTunes and this way everything was saved exactly as it was before the update: lists, ratings, album artwork, podcasts and of course all my songs.

So long as you dont move your music from its current location on your computer, you will be fine. I exported my library (option from within itunes) just to be safe because I was more worried about playlists, star ratings, play counts, etc. But after reinstalling itunes everything was the same and I never needed to import my library. It must leave behind files after uninstalling that let it remember that kind of stuff.

Hi Mark. I seem to have the same problem as you.

I had an older ipod nano ( 5 years old), and wanted to change the music on in. I stated getting the same error messages. After chatting to several friends and trying heaps of things, including uninstalling latest ipod updates, and going back to an older version,

I gave up figuring there was no more support.

Went out today and purchased breand new ipod nano 16gig.

Guess what ... I have the same problem, computer wont recognise it.

And recently, yes i, too upgraded my laptop to windows 8.1

I read what you did to get it to work, but I am not too good at computers.

Could you reply with simple instructions, or direct me to a webpage that has what you did to correct the problem

thanks from Heather
