Im having problems with my iPod Nano (7th gen), I recently mgot a message from iTunes saying "An iPod has been detected, but could not be identified properly. Please disconnect then reconnect and try again. If problem persists uninstall iTunes then install iTunes again.

I have followed these steps and also reset the iPod as well as gone into the control panel on my acer windows 8.1 and stopped the device and re started it but same message comes up.

Try this:

Windows 8.1, 64bit

It appears that the 64bit install messed up the device drivers for the Apple mobilie devices connecting as USB.

I tried many things, I may have missed a step below. But the following is what I believe was the fix - since it worked on a 2nd PC.

Make sure you are using an administrator account. Any of them on your machine will do for the following

a) Get Windows to restart the drivers:

- disconnect your USB device and close ITunes

- connect your USB device

- if ITunes loads, close it.

b) File explorer:

  • Open File explorer and browse to
  • C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers
  • In that folder there should be a set of files named "usbaapl64...."
  • right click on the one ending in "INF"
  • Select Install. It's very quick.
  • remove the USB device

c) Restart the computer.

When you login again, load ITunes before you attach your USB device.

Hi Richard, I'm so glad this is working for so many people........ but not me! I get down to the part about installing the .inf file, and I can click on it and hit "install," but I get an error message saying "The INF file you selected does not support this message of installation."

Any further ideas? Sorry to bug you, but I've been through all the Apple help files, tried everything on their list, and nothing has worked yet. I was pretty hopeful about your procedure because it was working so well for others!

Hi there,

Since the problem still occurs and I'm sure for different reasons, I just wanted to post my scenario:

1. OS - Windows 10 Technical Preview Build 10130

2. iTunes Version - 12.1.2.27 64bit

3. iPod 3rd Gen 16GB

Your fix worked.

Windows detected the device and installed drivers, but they were generic, it seems. iTunes would say it could recognize that an iPod device was attached but that it couldn't be identified. Performing these prescribed steps worked exactly as advertised.

Thanks!

I have no idea what just happened, but i followed your very simple instructions AND IT WORKED!!! I just spent 64 minutes on the phone with Apple Support. We tried a variety of steps and concluded that i needed to drive to a Genius reservation to see if a fix was possible. On this generation nano, there is none, and a purchase of a refurbished one at $65 may be available. Been there, done that. My next move would've been to scrap the nano, and buy a touch for $200. Richard, your expertise and willingness to generously share it with your audience has kept my nano alive. Now i can manage thru the day at the job blaring my podcasts w/o fear of boredom. Thank YOU, Richard! (Why does'nt Support know this?)

Guys this still works in Windows 10 with the smallest of differences. There is no file ending in "INF" so just select "usbaap164". It will be the only file that gives you the "install" option. All 3 of my family's iPods now recognised through iTunes. Its a pity Apple Tech Support dont read these posts and re-train the staff to help rather than follow a script to direct you to a fruitless journey to the Genus Bar!

GENIUS!!! You posted a solution in 2014, and it is still helping in 2016. I had been trying to find a solution for a LOOONG time - downloading this, uninstalling and reinstalling that, new cords, restarting everything, etc. After searching MANY other sites, I thankfully found this one 🙂 I followed your instructions, magic happened, and I finally got my iPod to be recognized! Thank you for all your help!

Hello all,

I had the same issue connecting my iPod nano 6gen to iTunes on Windows 10, tried reinstall and hack from richardmoye without success (but solved iPhone connectivity :-) ).

I solved this issue as followed:

1. Unplug your iPod.

2. Open services.msc.

3. Find iPod Service and stop it.

4. Change service properties to Automatic startup type and start this service.

5. Plug and enjoy your iPod.
