Keynote 6.1 QuickTime Export Function Crashes App

Another workaround:

Open Quicktime and record a screen capture. Then play your Keynote presentation and record your voice over. Then you can import your quicktime file into iMovie the same way you would've after Keynote exported your voice over.

Have the same issue here. But it hangs, not crashes.

One very, very, very annoying workaround 'till Apple get this right is:

1. Have a screencapture software working (Screenflow, Quicktime, etc.)

2. Start recording

3. Open your presentation on Keynote

4. In Keynote, go to Play > Play recorded slideshow

Then wait.

Yes, it's really stupid. But better than re recording something.

I'll just leave it during launch and come back after, but yeah, stupid.

And Keynote 6.0 was working just fine! How were they able to crash something that is working!?

Well... software development... that is not that uncommon

Oh well. Hopefully they will come up with a update ASAP. Love the keynote. But I need to export!

This helped me most of the time. Try out:

1. If if crashes, just force quit and reopen.

2. Then when exporting, DO NOT CHANGE THE FILE NAME!

I don't know why, but when I change the file name, that's when it crashes!

When you export it defaults to the file name. Leave it like that. You can even save in a different folder, but DO NOT change the file name!

Now, I don't know if this will work for everyone. But for me worked 🙂

I've found a solution - when you export to Quicktime select 'Custom' and use 'ProRes 422' instead of H.264

This seems to export ok. I'm guessing the H.264 exporter is bung.

The ProRes fie size is going to be way bigger. But you can always re-encode the video back into H.264 using the Quicktime app.

Thanks! That works for me. I haven't tried the video file on another machine, esp Win, yet to test compatibility.

As you said, the file is big! A 2.7Mb Keynote file with a few images and animations became 2Gb movie!

To watch ProRes on Windows the PC will need the Quicktime ProRes Decoder installed.

But just use Quicktime on your Mac to 'export' and it will convert it to a more friendly format.

I forgot to post an update, I did use QT to re-export the video and the 2Gb file became a more manageable 84Mb.

The solution to export to Pro Res 422, manages to keep even the exact timing between a transition and the other? Or just avoid the crash Keynote?

This has been a huge problem for us. We fequently used Keynote in our client work and would finish to a quicktime export. If the software is unreliable, it is useless to us. End of story.

My work around for now is to screen-record the lessons. I play back the recorded slideshow and then use quicktime to screen record. Quicktime doesn't, by default, let you record the system audio--but there is a plugin called Soundflower which does.

This is a bit of a pain because I convert them to MOV files in real-time, whereas export used to be really fast. But at least I'm not crippled while waiting for export to be fixed. My lessons play find on screen, I just can't export them.

As a bit of research on this issue as there appears to be two lots of Keynote users, ones who have no issues and those who have specific problems such as exporting to QT. I am a freelance designer and have no links with Apple other than as and end user.

Were these Keynote files originally created in version 5 and now being edited in 6, or created from scratch in 6?

How was Mavericks installed on your Mac, updated on top of a previous OS, pre-installed on a new Mac bought as a new product, clean istalled by repartitioning the drive then installing Mavericks?
