Keynote 6.1 QuickTime Export Function Crashes App

I updated from the "new" Keynote (probably 6.01) to the latest version 6.1 a couple of days ago. Since the update when I try and export a recorded slideshow as a Quicktime video, the app crashes. I have tried exporting the slideshow as a Keynote '09 slideshow and then exporting it as a Quicktime video within the '09 app. That works but it is an inadequate workaround since you will lose a lot of transitions and builds that were in the original slideshow created in 6.01 or 6.1. In addition, this problem is not computer related since the problem exists on my MacMini too. Anyone else having this problem? I called Apple and they were no help whatsoever. Called them on a Calendar issue (giving me a 403 message when it updates) over the weekend and no help there either. This is just a mess. The computer is unusable...basically reduced to a ChromeBook.

Seriously how can Apple flog a piece of software that can't preform its basic funtion?

When putting together the pres I've worked on all this weekend, I actually considered using powerpoint as I'd just done the clients presentations in it. BUT mistakenly went with keynote THANKS A BUNCH APPLE!

I've worked through ever work around through keynote on this post with no joy and still the same crash every time, I think this will be the last time I ever use Keynote again. Goodbye!

Scott - This was a fresh install on a recently wiped harddrive. That is, neither Keynote nor OSX were upgrades. I have tried both presentations created in version 6 and keynotes upgraded from version 5. Opening a version 5 keynote frequently crashes the program for me.

Gollop - Be sure to leave a review in the App Store. People are more likely going to see it there than here.

I too am exceedingly frustrated with Keynote 6.1. Of course Mavericks is horrible, but I digress.

Keynote either quits unexpedly or I have to force quit it. In the 3 hours I've been working with it today I've forcequit 5 times, it's quit unexpedly 3 times and once on a force quit, the entire computer quit. What's going on at Apple trhat this sort of shoddy program and OS is coming out?

It's STUNNING how relatively few people are outraged about the new Keynote.

I finally got my first YouTube video uploaded after trying since November of last year. One video. Just one. What would normally take me two days took more than 3 months...

I had to record a full screen movie of the preview and convert it - HUGE pain.

And of course, it unexpectadely quit over 100 times.

Did Apple hire Microsoft people?

I'd love to know how many people at Apple (or outsourced) work on Keynote - it wouldn't surprise me if that number was less than 2.

I moved over from Microsoft because of these type of issues, but these problems are far worse than experienced on Windows. I use Keynote very regularly and rely on the ability to convert to a movie file, so this particualr issue is quite distressing! If anyone finds a fix to this....please post.

I'm losing in faith in Apple's ability to produce a good, relaible and high quality product.

I had the same problem and came up with the solution that worked for me:

  • Created my keynote and audio in Keynote 6
  • Exported it to Keynote 09 (that's one of the export options)
  • Opened that file with Keynote 6 (go figure)
  • Exported it to Quicktime with no probblem with audio fully sync'd.

Hope this help some of you! My deck only had 30 slides so don't know how some of you with really large files will fare but wish you luck.

My usual workflow: (with iMac 4 Gb Ram)

- Export to QT

- Custom size: 1920 x 1080

- Apple ProRes

- Select desitination

- Click 'Ok'

It starts exporting and in 70% cases, Keynote freezes... (not crashes)

I thought it was Ram Issue. Upgraded and made it to 12 GB Ram as i was in middle of an imp project, thinking it would flush these freezes and random crashes...

BUT, after 12 GB Ram, Keynote performance is same. Freezeing and crashing continues... So I concluded that its software bug since apple made it from ground up... I believe we will be there in a couple of more updates...

Now some surpirse finding with this issue:

while exporitng as QT, if Keynote freezes, just wait for a min or so. Dont do anything.

Go to your Destination folder and check if your exported QT is ready. Once u see your QT there, Force Quit Keynote.

My experince is: Keynote exports my all QT properly in my destination folder while it freezes on your face. Funny ? Yes it is... in background it does its job properly of exproting, but on front it just freezes...

So next time if your keynote freezes while exproting QT, just dont do anything until u get that export ready in your destination folder and thn force quit... No other workaround is ideal for hi res QT till Apple fix this...

For the vast majority of users, Keynote function correctly, but there are many users who have very annoying issues. Reinstalling Mavericks has proven to be the most effective methos of running Keynote that has persistant problems:

Re-install Mavericks

Thanks GizmosGirl, this work-around worked for me. Some of my timing was off because some of the animations aren't compatible to the '09 version but I was able to redo that part relatively easily.

Would love to hear if anyone else has heard from Apple as to an update - this seems like it should be a standard feature that shouldn't have this type of bug. Can't export to YouTube or Vimeo either...
