virus genieo

My apologies! the problem is that I am infected with the Geneio vurus and my Safari home page opens into the Genieo home page.

No I haven't removed the extensions. Is that what I should do?

There is no Genieo virus, just some adware installed as described by Linc, so again we need to understand what problems you are seeing? If it's simply that it opens to the Genieo home page then you need to change that in Safari Preferences->General and change then entry in the box near the middle where it says "Homepage:"

Then, as andyBall_uk just mentioned, look in Safari Preferences->Extensions and remove any extensions that you do not recognize, especially one called "Omnibar".

Yes, that & check/alter the homepage settings.

OK I'm using the advice in Linc Davis' entry. I'm not having any success

They should do pretty much the same thing as Linc's, but may suit you better. Some people may do better with Linc's directions, others with mine, just based on how we phrase things.

Simply, Go to All My Files -> Search for 'genien' -> Then, select all the files that are related to the installation of Genieo Malware. Then, right mouse click-> selct 'Move To Trash'. Then, empty your trash.

Then, You permantently remove the Genieo Malicious Malware for Mac.

Even if you spell 'genieo' correctly, the above instructions will not find any of the files that are in /private/etc/, /Library/ or /usr/lib/ so basically it won't permanently remove much of anything.

I read your instructions on how to get rid of genieo - but ... My mac is bought in DK, and when I click Safari>Safari-udvidelser (= Safari extensions) I get to the page where I can download extensions, but I don't seem to have any ...

Also I don't seem to have any ' launchd.conf' file, what I could find (searching Mac) is:

com.genieo.global.settings.plist

com.genieo.settings.plist

com.genieoinnovation.installer

com.genieoinnovation.mac.extension.plist

Would it be safe to remove them?

I am rather nervous about making a mistake, as I have downloaded Mavericks, and have learned that I therefore no longer can re-install OSX with my original Mac OS X Install DVD (it came with Snowleopard) ...

That is not where Linc's instructions direct you. You need to choose Preferences from the Safari menu, then go to the Extensions tab in the preferences window.

If you don't see that file, you need to be very cautious. There are cases where this file may not be present, but if it's there and you just didn't locate it, removing certain other files will cause your Mac to crash and be unable to restart. If you do not find this file, you can remove any of the other files in Linc's instructions except the .dylib files found in the /usr/lib folder! If they are present, you should also have a launchd.conf file, and removing them without removing it will result in the crash.

You can always reinstall Mavericks (hold command-R at startup) whenever needed. If you wanted to downgrade to Snow Leopard at any point, you can do that as well, but it will require erasing the hard drive.

Thanks tomas_r, now I got it about the extensions - all I have is Omnibar, so I don't need to remove anything there. And thanks for the info on how to reinstall, that's a relief 🙂

I might just do that, also to clean the harddisk properly, there seems to be residues of the Office 2008 and probably other stuff as well, at least the free part of CleanMyMac shows there's plenty that can be cleaned out.

So far I have not been able to find the launch.conf file, but I'll search thouroughly.

I did get Safari to launch with the homepage I want, but in order to avoid genieo - which interferes, even though the magnifying glass is there and it says 'Search in google or write an adress' - I have to go to Yahoo using the bookmark and find google, then google ... All because I tried to find some music somewhere else than Youtube, which we are banned from using here in Turkey 😟

Yes you do. Omnibar was installed by Genieo.
