MacBook Pro 15" Retina Crashes with GPU Panic

Hello, I'm pretty bored with problem which happens more than 5 times per day while I'm using my MacBook Pro 15" with Retina.

My laptop restars and deadlocks and I have to make 'hard' reboot (by pressing power button for a while).

After restarting it shows me dialog which is about system error and asks me to send a report to Apple.

Here's the log:

How can I solve this problem? I can't even do my work fine because of this issue.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Mavericks (10.9.1), GPU Panic

To follow up on this:

When I was encountering full panics the most often, Console would report a few crashes that were correlated -- i.e. they frequently occurred just prior to a full system panic. These were:

- "garcon" which is associated with Dropbox. During the weeks of November in which I'd had the most panics, garcon was always registering a crash.

- Firefox 33 was also a culprit. If I had any complicated websites open in Firefox, and Firefox started feeling "sluggish" to me, this often immediately prefaced a full system panic.

Since that time, I've noticed that Dropbox has been updated several times in those few weeks, with many bug fixes related to Yosemite, and I'm currently running v. 2.10.52. I haven't had a garcon crash listed in Console for two weeks (11/24). Additionally, I reduced my use of Firefox, and shifted over to Safari. Since that time, Firefox has updated to v. 34, but I don't see specific signs of bug fixes associated with the panic issues that people have been reporting. Yet, with these two behavior changes, I've had no indication of a panic since.

Both are clearly just correlative, and were only based on hints from the Console, but those changes were associated with a reduction in kernel panics. The browser issues clearly could be related to, e.g. Flash, but I also used Flash in Safari with no issues.

I wish that these observations could be linked to more specific pathways, but hopefully they'll help or can be backed up by someone else.

I have similar problems as many of you here. Having a MacBook Pro Retina 15", bought in August 2012, and it all started after upgrading to Yosemite. There might be a connection, or just a coincidence, to my Antivirus program (Symantec Endpoint Protection) finding a file "com.search.agent.plist" which "contains a strain of OSX.searchprotect", and that's what my question is about.

Anyhow, regardless of the possible connection mentioned, my computer shortly after the update received kernel panics quiet a lot, and where not able to use due to all the shut downs (3-4 times/hour). Therefore it was turned in to the App store service. Handed back, "no obvious error" one day later. But the same problem was still there, everytime the Thunderbolt connection was used the computer froze and rebooted and the kernel panic message came up. I turned the computer in again, and after changing the mother/logic board (not sure about the exact term there?) for $700 it now works again (cheap upgrade to Yosemite 🙂)

BUT

today during my virus scan the virus is there again! And this even though everything is erased once - but unfortunately the computer had to be restored from the back up (including the old virus I guess...). Just like last time the virus program is not able to either repair or remove the file, so therefore this brings us to my question, what is to do about the virus? It is probably not the reason for the kernel panics but it creates an instability and that is not wonderful really...

Thank you so much!

I went to the apple dealer and got my motherboard/CPU changed. It took only a couple of days. But it didn't helped much 😟

Today i decided to go back to Mavericks because that's where i remember my computer worked brilliantly!

Therefore i made a clean install once again (which i also did with Yosemite.. with no luck unfortunately :/). After i installed Mavericks everything works so nice and so smooth! No lags between screen, no pixelations when going to mission control and best of all No CPU panic attacks! Everything just works as before Yosemite!

It feels like all my power just got activated again

and it feels good to be back!

Before I find FraVets link to macrumors.com article with this issue official solving, I made some to solve it by myself.

Now it's more than 2 weeks of this issue disappeared!

Firstly the problem happened with ML 10.9.3. No updates helped. Even fully clear installing of Yosemite. It brought only some new kinds of crash reports.

After installing HWMonitor I found the temperature of the CPU had been extremely high all time. It was not less than 90 Celsius. Even with no real load.

Fans worked at lowest 2000rpm.

So, before I would kill my Mac throwing to the wall with this GPU panic, I had made last try.

Having same model (but just early 2013 MBP 15" Retina), I just disassembled the only one thermal pipe from CPU and GPU and find very dry thermal heatsink paste.

Fortunately I had very simple and cheap thermal paste at home. After clearing of heatsink plates of CPU, GPU and plates of thermal pipe from old dried paste, I covered the plates by new one.

After assembling back, I made SMC (only) reseting.

Now it is about third week with the GPU panic issue gone. External monitor, Flash videos and other actions which normally made system crash, now working with no questions.

After my third repair replacing just about everything, logic board, memory even the 750.42 GB SSD it still crashed any time load or no load, power or battery. This would have been my 4th repair but that's not what they did. This time my jaw dropped when they said they are replacing my 2012 MacBook Pro with a new 2015 Macbook even upgrading my SSD to a 1TB SSD. Shocked yes but I have been through **** and back. Keep every log of the Panic Crash that you have.

I am interested to hear what type of hard drive you have? It is a very long road but after being repaired three times they may decide to replace your MacBook Pro. That is what happened to me after replacing almost everything even the hard drive. This never should have happened but it did, many times.

I took my mid 2012 15" Mbpr in under this programme as it would continuously freeze, then shutdown during normal use.Sometimes I would have to press the power button to start up again, sometimes it starts up automatically. Most times it occurred while scrolling on twitter or safari.

If I disable auto graphics switching it never happens. It never happened before Yosemite but by then I was out of warranty and used the usual work arounds.

Then I heard about the program and booked a genius appointment. Apple did a number of tests which it passed all of course. They then kept it for 48 hours for further testing. I called the store after 48 hours to be told that the macbook would require a new logic board at a cost of over £400. I asked what did they find was the problem? They said it was during graphic switching that the macbook would crash, and because it passed all of apple's tests it would not be done for free under the repair program. I said but its doing the same thing stated in the program? Yes. But because it doesn't fail one set test by apple it wont be replaced even though it is the same known faulty part. Spoke to the store manager etc but they weren't willing to budge on this which is pretty poor considering the cost of the macbook

Aug 29, 2015 1:14 PM in response to davyg82

My 2012 Macbook Pro also passed every test but it would constantly crash sometimes two, three times a day. I did keep all of my Crash Reports at least the ones that it let me. I finally passed my 3rd year of AppleCare+ but because it was a continuing problem they extended my coverage. They basically replaced my entire computer and it still crashed. I wasn't sure it was my SSD but that is what I blame. It was the largest they had at the time 768GB. So after what would have been my 4th repair Apple did something that I didn't expect. They replaced my old 2012 Macbook Pro with a brand new 2015 Macbook Pro with a 1TB SSD. Whatever my problem was I no longer have it. I have been running 24/7 since I received the new Macbook and now it runs like it should have run in the 1st place.

Although I am grateful at what they did I would prefer my old Macbook Pro over what I had to put up with getting to the place of a replacement Macbook Pro. I have heard that replacing the Macbook Pro after three repairs going on a fourth repair is something that Apple will do. My replacement validates that assumption but I would think it is handled on a case by case basis, I'm just not sure. Is this rare or has it happened to others?
