MacBook Pro 15" Retina Crashes with GPU Panic

Hello, I'm pretty bored with problem which happens more than 5 times per day while I'm using my MacBook Pro 15" with Retina.

My laptop restars and deadlocks and I have to make 'hard' reboot (by pressing power button for a while).

After restarting it shows me dialog which is about system error and asks me to send a report to Apple.

I've been running the El Capitan GM candidate since release(9.9.15) through the public beta testing programm

with automatic graphics switching enabled and haven't had one crash since. Thats going from several daily crash/freezing events.

I hope I haven't given myself the kiss of death but long may it continue.

I appear to be having this problem (still) on OSX 10.10.5.

SOLUTION (for some people)

Check first if you fall into one of the Macbooks experiencing known issues here:

If you are you'll likely be covered in a program. Luckily I was covered on a two year old macbook even though I don't have apple care.

This is a GPU issue, and will require a new logic board. If you bring it to an apple store it may still pass the video card test with a faulty card if you've booted using the option command P R as you'll have cleared all error report data. This happened to me and I passed the test, and later failed it after a fresh crash. You might have to wait until you have a new crash, and get them to boot it without using that command and then run the VST test and it will likely fail and show you need a new GPU.

If you are not covered you may use the link above to argue that this is a known issue and perhaps get a discount (some people have got 40-50% OFF)

I have had a machine basically un-usable for months. New system updates would set the GPU back to switching and then panic. Re-applying thermal paste has so far kept everything running just like new. Also it must be a root cause as it doesn't run the fans very much either.
