Macbook Pro RAM vs VRAM Question

Hello Readers,

I have recently purchased a Macbook Pro.

Tech Specs:

13" Macbook Pro Mid 2012

4GB Ram

i5 CPU

Intel HD 4000 GPU

I have been scouring the discussions here trying to find a definite answer to the RAM vs VRAM debate.

Currently my understanding is that 4GB of RAM gets 512mb VRAM and that 8GB of RAM will increase the VRAM to 768mb. I understand that the VRAM is situational and that the aforementioned VRAM numbers are at maximum potential in respect to the amount of RAM currently installed.

I need to know if the Intel HD 4000 will cap at 768mb VRAM even if I were to increase the RAM to the maximum 16GB.

I am definitely going to be upgrading the factory RAM. I would like to know if going past 8GB is worth it. I am not interested in spending the extra $100 on 16GB vs 8GB if my VRAM will plateau at 768mb with the 8GB of RAM. If 16GB of RAM will get me a 1GB VRAM I will spend the extra dollars.

Furthermore, I am also wondering what people have to say about Crucial's RAM upgrades. From what I have read so far Crucial is the way to go for Mac RAM upgrades. I will also be doing the upgrade myself.

Thanks for reading.

and Thanks in advance for the advice.

The maximum is ~1.7 GBs and would require a system with 32 GBs of installed RAM. So that would imply that at 16 GBs the maximum available VRAM should be around 1.2 GBs (I'm trying to add in my head, but I think another 512 MBs.)

I found this information as it was determined on a Windows system. No assurance it is the same on the Mac.

i have the mid 2012 13" non retina mbp.

apple limits the vram in mountain lion to 512mb with 16gb ram.

the vram limit in maverics is 1024mb with 16gb ram.

there is a legitimate exploit to adjust the vram in mountain lion to be whatever you want, by editing, and running this script:

sudo perl -pi -e 's|\x00.{1}\x10\x07\x00\x00\x10\x07|\x00\x??\x10\x07\x00\x00\x10\x07|g' ~/Desktop/AppleIntelFramebufferCapri.kext/Contents/MacOS/AppleIntelFramebufferC apri

Change the red ?? with the red number bellow to set the desired amount of VRAM:

10 = 256MB of RAM

18 = 384MB of RAM

20 = 512MB of RAM

30 = 768MB of RAM

40 = 1024MB of RAM

80 = 2048MB of RAM

1. copy AppleIntelFramebufferCapri.kext to the desktop and make a backup of it

2. run the script in the terminal (dont forget to fill in the ??)

3. install the kext, rebuild caches (i would suggest kext wizard)

4. restart

Doesn't look as if they even SELL Mac-specific RAM... why do you think that Crucial RAM is overrated? I've yet to see anyone here having problems with it yet with PNY, etc., we have folks having a number of problems.

I admit that I'm prejudiced as I've had Crucial for a long time... but I hardly think that you can call it 'overrated' when it simply works well with Macs and is guaranteed to work with Macs.

Thanks Jon and Clinton.

Jon: Did Komputerbay RAM work for your Mid 2012 MBP?

and ya I found that script after having posted this discussion. I still have yet to recieve my refurbished MBP. But I will definitely be giving it a shot once I get the RAM upgrade.

Clinton:
Here is the original post of that script if you want to see how other people fared using mavericks
