Restoring Aperture Library from Vault

Hi all,

I hope someone can help. I recently had my 'Drobo' die on me as two discs failed at the same time. I also have a copy of my Aperture Library backed up in a Vault. I have carried out a 'Restore from Vault' and my new external HD shows 1.5TB of data (same as my original library). When I open Aperture, I can see all my folders and projects, but each project has no photos in it. I have tried repairing the database and rebuilding the database using the option key on start up, but I repeatedly get to approx 83-89% complete and my system hangs and I get a message that I have run out of applications memory. I then get the Spinning wheel and eventually have to reboot the iMac.

1. How can I recover my data?

2. Is there anything else I can/should do? Am I doing anything wrong?

3. Is there anyway of recvering the files seperately of the external hard drive with other data recovery software?

I am running Aperture the most uptodate version of Aperture 3.4.x, on OS X Mavericks, on a 3.4GHz i7 iMac with 12GB ram.

One point I may need to add, I was backing up to Vault when my 'Drobo' unit failed, although based on the size of the vault, I think it had finished backing up, although can not be certain.

Any help/assistance or advice would be greatfully received as I have lost my library, its parity due to two failed drives simultaneously and possibly a corrupt vault(?).

Thank you in advance for your help.

Your post raises a number of questions:

First are the originals stored as managed files or as referenced files? Second if the vault was on the Drobo and the Drobo failied where did you get the vault from that you are recovering from?

You can look in the restored library in the Masters folder to see if the originals are there. Locate the library in the Finder, right click and choose Show package contents then navigate to the Masters folder, are the originals there?

You can do the same thing with the vault, the procedure is the same.

If all other options are exhausted there may be one more thing to try. It is possible to take the library (vault in your case) apart in pieces and reassemble the pieces in a new library framework.

I've had some success doing this on libraries that seemed totally lost, of course there is no guarantee. Let me dig through my notes for the procedure and if you haven't been able to restore using normal means I'll post it later tonight or tomorrow AM.

Hi Frank, after reading your answers, I will try to describe my problem, that has some similarities as Snurge´s.

I have an old MacBookPro 2008, (the first aluminum model) with upgraded hardware and software to 1Tb HD, plus 8Mb RAM. OS Maverick, Aperture 3,5,1.

Initially When I began with second Aperture version, accidentally I made two database in separate files. When upgraded Aperture to version 3, both database merged to one. Unfortunately in this process I loose some original files, only appeared the versions.

I backuped with time machine prior to upgrade to 1Tb and RAM.

The new configuration, ran fast during a short time. First The Mac shut down unexpectedly, and when started, it requires repair disk. It never repaired correctly. After checking many procedures, I ran fsck -fy three times with no success. Finnally the hard drive did not started IOS more, so I had to replace it.

I replaced for a new 1Tb, and with Time Machine I restored the information, the IOS and data.

The problem with Aperture began to intensify, and it claimed for repair data any time I started Aperture. I used also restore, with no success and as a result the 90% of my photos disappeared, only the folders exist, and some photos has a exclamation alert above the file.

Unfortunatelly last time I was restoring the system Time Machine took all the night doing the process, finished and next time it tried to back up, overwrite old version (non corrupted) and as a result all my backups are corrupted.

I tried to downloaded my recent photos using Lightroom, but Aperture opens when I connected the Compact Flash card reader. I cancelled the preview in Aperture, but surprisingly it does not being recognized again.

After checking, the Compact Flash Card with 32Gb photos was damaged, but the more serious, the Mac book doesn't started again. The ram was also damaged.

Now I had to pay in order to restore my photos from CF, but my 15 years photos stored in the old mac and external memory are corrupted.

I have an external backup corrupted, a hard disk damaged and an old MacbookPro with corrupted information.

I decided to buy a new MACBOOKPRO but I am not sure how to proceed with corrupted files from Aperture. What do you recommend me??
