Conversion Question: Building a Movie Server w/ Mac Mini
Well the wife to be is in France for the next two weeks, so I find myself with a ton of freetime. I Have decided to finally build a Movie server.
So far I have picked up a 300gig external HDD. I am planning on picking up a core solo mac mini to do the "heavey lifting" and use frontrow as the main UI to the movies.
Now I have read here that Front Row will not play Video_TS folders (it ***** but i'll work around it) What I am planning on doing is ripping my DVD's with Handbrake.
Now with Handbrake I was thinking of "upconverting"/ripping to a H.264 format .mp4. I think this will allow me to put the movies on the external HDD and then point iTunes to the folder location on the external drive.
Here are my questions:
1. Will front row allow me to navigate the movies on the external HDD with the remote?
2. I want to make an automator action that does something to the effect of {if dvd} {open handbrake} {rip dvd to location x} {eject} how would i go about doing this?
3. Is the core solo good at encoding? right now for a 2hour movie in H.264 it takes my powerbook 1.67 (1.5gig mem) about 6hours to process the files.
Do this plan sound good? or is it crap? Please if you have better suggestions let me know. I have looked at 3rd party apps but i have yet to find one i like (and that works well).
Thank you for your time. Take it easy.
