Pages 5.1 doesn't work

Since an auto update a couple of days ago to pages 5.1 (even with a fancy new icon), I cannot open the program nor any docs previously created. What kind of crap is this? I was completely happy with the previous version with its ugly icon.

Peter, so after my earlier post I did rate the app and interestingly got a note from Apple. I had a follow on note from the iWork team asking for examples of documents I was having issues with. I sent two and then never heard anything further for a week or so, wrote back and basically got the response that they couldn't tell me anything and I'd just have to wait for future bug fixes or releases! So it was a total waste of my time, and another example of the very poor customer focus they have! I continue to basically use Pages '09 because I need something that translates all the Windows documents I get and even with the problems in some areas, Pages 5 totally destroys a Windows document in ways that make it unusable.

Jackallday, I was shocked to wake up this AM to find Pages 5.1 had decided to install itself on my MacBook Air. I was right in the middle of tracking changes to a book edit. First the computer wouldn't even turn on. As I was making my genius bar appt. (50 mi. away) it finally awoke (thank god). But in Pages 5.1 in the tracking bar there is no tracking bubbles function.

Your advice to simply drag the Pages 5.1 icon from Finder into the Trash was a lifesaver. A million thanks!

Hello to the group.

I've never written here, never thought I would have to, or feel so compelled to write a complaint about Apple. I'm trying to write a major proposal, and switch to Pages 5.1 yesterday - did the whole download thing and all the updating.

It really was almost unusable, and today I did confirm, to myself, that you can't do bookmarks in Pages 5.1. Also, I don't understand why the Inspector feels so constraining and limiting in its function when all the other menus are tear off floaters.

Finally, I just went back to recreate a 30 page document in the old pages... and had a rather very very frustrating day with the new easy to use Apple in part because I could find no manual other than online help. Unfortunately, the whole experience was like working with Word.

If this is an indicator, I would worry about the market.

Roger,

I understand that you have already reconstructed your Pages 4.3 version of the document, but I think you may have been able to simply "Revert" to the old version in Finder. Could you confirm this for us? It might be helpful for others to know if this would work. Make sure your reconstructed document is securely saved under a new filename, and backed up, before trying so you don't lose ground again. Then see if you can Browse Versions in Finder to get to the last saved version of your 40-page document prior to the upgrade.

Thanks Jerry,

Unfortunately, I erased the document as I restarted in order to be sure that the two documents would not get confused. I wish I could be of more help.

I did download the PDF of the manual; however, it is difficult to tell if it is the manual for Pages 5.1, or the old manual, as the cover just says "Pages - User's Guide." When I consult this user's guide - the one with the yellow thought balloon - it seems as if is for the prior version. Now, I could surely be wrong; however, the graphics in the manual do not seem to fit with the graphics I see on screen - namely the materials on making internal bookmarks.

Eventually, Apple, and this user, will figure things out.
