Red Screen

I turned on my Mac the other day and the display is red. I can still distinguish items on the screen, but there is a red overtone on the entire display. I tried using the display settings to adjust the color, but without success. Is this the beginning of the end of the screen?

Any suggestions for adjustments or fix?

Thanks

I too have been getting a red/pink screen recently. Mostly I cure it by reloading but it always comes back eventually. I have followed the discussion and have noted the suggestions but I don't get the impression that anyone actually knows what causes it. Is that because noone knows or is it because it could be caused by a variety of things and it is impossible to tell until you open it up? If it is the latter I have to say that paying more than the machine is worth to discover later that the problem has not gone away is a pretty depressing prospect. So if there is anyone who really does know what is causing this effect will he/she please step forward and tell those of us who are plagued by the problem what we can do to put it right.

have you tried a pmu reset as well?? if you have never done that, directions should be here. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300908. however, there is no internal pmu if your model is ambient light sensor or more recent, and if your model is flat panel, then instructions are here. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=95165. good luck. I had a green screen.. it was a loose video cable connection. One of the colours was not being transmitted to the display, so the other colours were coming in and showing up as green (I think I was missing red; you must be missing green) I opened the iMac up myself and just reseated the wire to the board. It didn't even feel like it clicked or anything. Re-applied thermal paste and have had no trouble since.

If you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself, bring it into an Apple dealer and ask them to clean your machine... and then just press the connection down onto the board... it shouldn't cost too much because it's not really a big job.

If you look under the discussions, you'll find that other people have had a similar problem with different colours.

I am on my second pink screen. I replaced the whole attached monitor after the local techs insisted that it was not software, video card or cable. It cost me about US$400 total. Major bummer on a machine that was on ebay for US$500-600. A few months a go it came back, the dredded pink screen was there in the morning. My temp fix has been to use an external monitor. The pink glow is just a little frustrating. I buy apple prodicts because they work, not becasue the fail.

Hi,
Stumbled across your question Re: "red screen". Had a similar problem except the scteen was blue tinted. Everything visible but with a blue tint.

Since there seems to be no instruction on how to deal with this problem I decided to fish around inside and see what I could find.

I dropped the bottom cover off the iMac and unplugged all leads that were unpluggable (honestly I don't know what all I unplugged). I also removed the internal ram card. I blew out the dust with compressed air, reconnected everything, installed a new pram battery...rebooted....everything back to normal.

This was a last resort for me after zapping PRAM and resetting PMU, neither of which worked.

Hope this helps.
