Can't print large document in landscape orientation

I have a large document (16x32") that I am trying to print on a single legal sized page.

I have landscape mode selected in Page Setup, yet when I select Print and tell it to print to a single Legal page (under Paper Handling I select Scale To Fit Paper Size and then select US Legal), it ends up printing in portrait orientation--even though the preview in the Print dialog box has it in landscape.

I have printed this document before (a month or two ago) and it worked fine. There have been I think 2 updates in the intervening weeks, has one of the updates changed something about printing?

Is there anything I can do to fix this?

Details: Pages 5.1, OS X Mavericks 10.9.1, MacBook Pro (late 2008)

Kirk,

Sorry you got nailed by the Pages printing bug, too. I have submitted bug report. You might want to do so as well. There is no formal fix, yet, but there are a few workarounds. 1) Print through Preview by first making a PDF. See the discussion above for details. If you can't figure this out I can walk you through it. 2) Downgrade to a previous version of Pages. If you still have a copy around (or that you can restore from an old backup), you can print from that, but keep in mind you may come up against the problem where older versions refuse to open a file that has been created and/or modified in the current version of Pages, so you may have to restore and older your document from a backup as well.

Good luck with this. Some around here will have you convinced you are a fool who can't do much right beyond just start up your computer, and that this printing problem is your fault, but don't buy into it...

Hey all,

I too am having the exact same problem. Clearly the bug is in iWork, because it's a problem in Numbers as well. Not only is landscape printing a problem, but also printing upside down. It's as if the dialog box, which shows the correct choices and preview, is then completely ignored when printing. Unfortunately I can't use the PDF work around because I print envelopes all day. When I have a thick envelope I need to print upside down so that I can print with the flap open. Likewise with a wide envelope I need to print landscape. This is truly a disaster for what I need to do.

In my case, I bought a new computer with Mavericks, so it came with the updated version of Pages. I do have my old iWork disks from my last computer (which continues to print landscape and reverse just fine on the same settings, so don't let anyone tell you there is no bug), but first, I don't know if Pages '09 will work wth Mavericks, and if so, I'll need to buy an external disk drive to install. This is a huge pain in the butt...

Glad to know I'm not crazy though...

Hello all,

I am very disappointed to say that Apple has not fixed this bug in the brand new Pages 5.2 just released. Like Pages 5.1, Pages 5.2 cannot print in landscape orientation. I am still sticking with Pages 5.0.1, which I have made precious backup copies lest I accidentally "upgrade" or get a forced upgrade against my will.

I really worry for Apple's software quality control. Bugs and crashes abound in iOS, and with iWork they manage to release a word processor that prints just fine in landscape mode through 5 major versions and all of a sudden stops printing landscape mode in a minor point release? Is nobody at Apple paying attention to details? This bug has been reported about Pages 5.1 since it was released and still no fix. Hello, Cupertino?

Now I'm off to the Mac App Store to leave my 1 star review and hope someone at Apple cares.

I too am very disappointed that Apple hasn't fixed this problem with version 5.2. I print greeting cards on a custom size stock of 7" x 10". If I try to print in landscape mode, it still prints in portrait mode.

Do you think this problem is limited to just custom paper sizes? In experimenting with the normal "US Letter" size setting, selecting landscape mode seems to print correctly.

I am SO happy that I still have Pages '09. It prints my cards perfectly.

This may seem like a dumb question, but where exactly does one submit a bug report?

I too am very disappointed. I was able to re-install my Pages '09 on my new computer, so I can print landscape, but the other problem, printing upside down (reverse page orientation) is not solved and must be a Mavericks problem because it doesn't work in my Pages '09 on the new computer either (but of course still works in my Pages '09 on my old computer that I never upgraded to Mavericks).

When I went to the Apple Store to get help with re-installing my Pages '09, of course they intially told me I was wrong and there's no bug. After 2 trips to the store (including them making me lug my own printer in to the store, as if it was a printer problem), they finally concurred, 'oh yeah, it seems to be a bug.' The bugs are annoying enough but it's really frustrating to be spoken to as if you are clueless and the problem cannot possibly be at their end.

*sigh*

Lee6666,

I am not sure if this is really the "right" or "real" way to submit a bug report, but you can give "feedback" on Pages at this link: http://www.apple.com/feedback/pages.html

I believe registered developers can submit bug reports as such.

Littl Wing,

I have always been treated well at the Genius Bar (do they still call it that?), being spoken to as if you are clueless seems to happen in these forums as well...

Littl Wing,

Yes, we lost the ability to print reverse orientation too. It stopped working for me in Pages '09 after I upgraded to Mavericks, just as you said. Such a pain. I would use that option to avoid smearing graphics.

As with the landscape bug, I think this bug is related to printing custom sizes. Try printing a normal letter size page with reverse page orientation checked. This seems to work correctly. But, when you create a custom size document -- or envelope, it stops working.

Mdjettatdi,

Thanks for the link!
