CHANGING THE KEY TO FIT THE SONG IN APPLE LOOPS

am using GB 6.05. have a song (tracks) in key of F# that i imported to GB. the loops i want to use are in key of C. how do i change the loops to the key of F#

i tried moving the slider +7 (7 semitones from C > F#) It still doesn't sound right.

once i get this prob solved how do i make the loops follow the chord progression of the song ?

I been all around on different forums/communities (apple included) and it seems the more i read, the more confused i get.

ANY help app

Roger,

the loops you want to use are Apple Loops from the Loop Browser?

Then GarageBand transposes them automatically to the key of your song.

Since your tracks are in F#, you should create your project set to the key of F# and then import the tracks.

When you now drag Apple Loops from the Loop Browser to the track area, the will automatically be transposed to F#.

once i get this prob solved how do i make the loops follow the chord progression of the song ?

That will not happen automatically. You will have to transpose each of the loops for the chord progression by shifting the slider - seven semitones for the quinte, etc.

If I count correctly, it should have been +6 .

many tks 4 reply, leonie

these tracks were originally created in Band in a Box (don't know if that makes any diff), dragged an dropped to GB.

1) In your statement: " Since your tracks are in F#, you should create your project set to . . ." What is a project set? (please excuse, i'm a mac newbie)

do you mean i should go back to square 1 (in band in a box) an change the key sig to "C" so that it will match the apple loops ?( because of the vocal range of the song, this is the only key the vocalist could sing it in). Is "create your project set in F# something i would do in band in a box or GB

2) on making the loops follow the chord prog, you say: "you will have to transpose each of the loops for the chord progression by shifting the slider". I understand better by seeing examples (screen shots would be MOST app) lets say my song changes from F# > B -- EXACTLY what steps would i take to make the loops change from F# > B at this point in my song.

I've viewed videos and tutorials and spent quite a bit of research and homework with this issue and am pretty much at my wits end. i guess that's just the price you pay for being a newbie. any help you (or anyone else reading this post) can offer would be greatly app.

roger

ps you are correct: it should have been+ 6 semitones. i tried +6 (+7, +5, ) nothing sounded right and i think the reason was because i hadn't tried to transpose each of the loops to fit the chord progression.

What is a project set?

I meant, "Set the key of the project to F#, when you create the project" and before you add any audio.

You set the key in the "New Project" panel, when you use the command "File > New Project", or in the LED display, if your project already has been created.

In the LED Display the project shows as F#:

User uploaded file

The sequence of chords F#, B, C# for the loops will look like this, transposed by 0, 5, and 7 semi note steps:

User uploaded file

To transpose, select each loop region in turn and adjust the "Pitch" slider in the Track Editor:

Enable "Follow Tempo & Pitch" for the Track with the loops.

MANY MANY TKS LEONIE - -

especially tks for the screen shots - they helped more than all the tutorials i've viewed put together. two last questions on this issue: 1) on transposing the loops so that they follow the songs chord prog -- i'm doing this:

after opening GB and assigning my key sig, i then xferred some tracks (drag & drop) from Band in a Box to GB. in the particular loop i'm using its 16 bars and my first chord change is at bar 4. precisely at bar 4 i have chopped off

(cut) the loop and by using the slider, made the transposition for that chord change and then (by drag & drop) add that same loop back into the track immediately behind where i chopped the first one off.-- i'm repeating this process everywhere there's a chord change. seems like i'm doing a lot of work for nothing with a lot of redundancy. (light bulb goes on ! !) why couldn't i just extend the loop all the way out for the length of my song and then put a break (cut the loop) separate it and with the slider transpose, then move it back let it play till the next chord change, cut it, separate it, transpose it, etc, etc.

2) i need to xfer and audio file (.wav) into GB and don't know how but some of the forums i've been reading say it has to be in AIFF. True ?? how would i xfer .wav from reaper > GB

as always

thanks

roger

Sorry,Roger,

it is very difficult for me to post at all this morning. I am continually seeing error messages.

But just to be sure - the title of your question is "CHANGING THE KEY TO FIT THE SONG IN APPLE LOOPS", and my answer is correct for properly installed Apple Loops that you add from the Loop Browser. Only these will conform automatically to the key of the project and the tempo of the project

Are your loops really installed as loops, or are it simple audio files? If it are audio files you have to convert and install them as loops.

I am confused by this:

i then xferred some tracks (drag & drop) from Band in a Box to GB. in the particular loop i'm using its 16 bars and my first chord change is at bar 4.

If your loops are audio files, create a new project for them to install them as loops. Once they are installed, you can use them as custom loops from the Loop Browser.

Added: Yes, GarageBand '11 can import wav, see this help page: http://help.apple.com/garageband/index.html#gbnda1a30047

sorry 4 the confusion - i'll try again

what i transferred from Band in a Box was audio files (.wav) and these were the basis for my song in GB. "in the particular loop i'm using" --- this refers to apple loops that were inserted from the apple loop browser. i want these loops to play in sync and change chords with the tracks i've already imported fro Band in a Box. hope this clears up the confusion.

in ref back to my last reply to you -- disregard my question regarding cutting the loops and transposing the cut segments-- i solved that one myself (thanks to your input from a previous reply) i checked out the links you included in your last reply -- they provided exactly the info i needed. thanks again for everything. like i said earlier, i'm not even sure that i qualify for "newbie" status as i havent had the mac very long and i'm sure i'll probably be back on the forum when i get stuck again

regards

All clear now. 🙂

You are welcome. I am glad you found the info you needed.
