Calendar not opening file? OSX Mavericks

I waited and waited to upgrade because I just know that they never get it right when they announce an upgrade.

WELL.....IT seems that I did not wait long enough. I searched and tons and tons of people are having problem...like me....with Calendar's ability to "OPEN A FILE"!

It used to do it..now with Mavericks...it does not...the calendar opens.....but the file I tell it to open does not open.

I have a web system and a piece of FTP software that needs to run every day and download the backup of my entire web system. The backup usually takes about 1 hour.

So...I had Calendar set to open the file that tells the FTP software where to go and download that file every day at about 1 am.

PERFECT...it was done before I would get into work...every day.

NOW....calendar is not doing it any more......

So..........ANY SUGGESTION on a piece of software I can go buy or download that will do this for me?

Hi. I just came across this problem with Yosemite. And, I reckon the problem occurred when I responded to the calendar alert on my iPhone. The alert was usually set to open a file at 2am, and I was normally asleep at that time. Hence, the feature has worked perfectly fine for me before the incident. However, this time, I accidentally "closed" the alert on my iPhone. Ever since, whenever I try to create a new event that opens a file on my Mac, the alert disappears automatically after the event is created.

I contacted Apple Support. And, apparently the problem is that iCloud calendar will sync this event that "opens a file" across all devices, including the iOS ones. Obviously, the file can't be opened on your iOS devices. So, the way to use the feature on your Mac again is to create a calendar that is only "On My Mac". You can do that by right-clicking the empty space in the pane on the left of the Calendar window, and select "New Calendar". That new calendar will be under the category "On My Mac". Create the new event to open your file using this new calendar, and things should be back to normal.

Hope this helps anyone who still has this problem. I know how frustrating it can be. Good luck!User uploaded file

Thanks for solving the same problem for me!

I knew that answer would be to create an "on my Mac" calendar but didn't see how to do that. OS X now has far too many features that are hidden and can only be accessed by putting the cursor in an unexpected place or right-clicking somewhere or option-clicking somewhere, with only obscure documentation (if any). The Calendar app should certainly show the option to create a new "on my Mac" calendar in the File - New Calendar entry, but it does not.

I just ran into this problem on El Capitan and this idea fixed it, but I had trouble figuring out how to create a calendar that is "On My Mac" because this method did not work when I had no existing calendars on my mac. I created one by going into Automator and creating a Calendar event. This created a Calendar on my mac called "Automator". I then could rename it to "Open Files" and everything then worked as described by this post, including creating additional calendars on my mac.
