I use a VPN service when I connect any of my devices, including my iPhone, to a wi-fi network that is not mine (e.g. at the library or coffee shop). I use it to prevent others on that public network from eavesdropping on my web use when I am using non-secure websites or communications.
Yes, you can use a VPN to view regionally restricted content, and yes, you can try to use a VPN to evade the NSA, but those shouldn't be the main reasons you use it because it won't be perfect for those uses.
The main use should be to secure your Internet connection from hackers. VPN is commonly used by businesses to give employees and contractors access to corporate resources without exposing it to hackers.
I do agree that more users should be aware of the vulnerability of their devices on public wifi networks, and therefore VPN does not necessarily fall into the category of "if you don't know, you don't need it." It's odd to see some users so paranoid about viruses and hackers with their laptop, but then they pull out the phone and put it on public wifi and don't even worry about that fact that their phone is just as vulnerable.
Steven, your insight on this post has been immensely accurate, and helpful. Although, in regards to your post when you were replying to MTMasonMacs post - was inaccurate. Why I say this, is that MTMasonMac did NOT mean the information on this post itself was not helpful, MTMasonMacs comment was specifically aimed at KiltedTims origional - hasty, unhelpful and somewhat rude reply. Thus, meaning MTMasonMac meant KiltedTims origional reply was no help and nothing less.
Hay since y'all are sooo knowledgeable about this vpn stuff u wanna help me out... I sorta deleted mine thinking it should have had like my wifi nickname on it not my service provider and uhhh I don't get all the usernames and Ids and passwords... wishhhh I just left it alone....
Very informative responses, though some of u tried to escape giving fair answers to this basic important question.
thank u all anyway; have fun
Nice response Stephen!
I'm 68, an old Navy Nuke, and would not have been anywhere as nice.
No kidding. Jarheads...😁
Thank you. Very helpful.
not helpful at all.
Steven, thank you for helping. I certainly hope other Level 9 people are not as callous as the KiltedTim person. Any help that anyone can get is useful.
Whoops! I marked KiltedTim's reply as "helpful." It isn't. In fact, KiltedTim, I felt your reply was abrupt and rather rude.
Dear Oldshep5
Hi I am not that tech savvy but wouldn't want any technical items open to anyone so I have norton's vpn. I would advise all the people I know to have it too. Not that hard to set up.
Rude!
A virtual private network, commonly referred to as a VPN, is a type of connection you can use over the internet that helps to secure your identity as you surf the web.
A VPN is important because it’s a line of defense between you and other users of the internet. VPNs have many different uses, but some of the most important are privacy and security.
Some VPNs are free, and some are paid, but all VPNs have terms and conditions that you need to abide by, unless you create your own and you can set your own rules.
Typically, paid VPNs are of higher quality and security than free ones, but some free VPNs are just as good depending on what you’ll be using it for.
Using a VPN on your iOS device and your Mac is a good idea in most scenarios where you want additional privacy and security, but the process of using a VPN on each is different in many ways.
VPNs can be had on your iOS device by downloading VPN apps from the App Store or by configuring your own VPN configuration profile in the device’s Settings app. Most of the time, downloading a VPN service from the App Store is the easiest route to take.
VPN123 and TunnelBear, which is the VPN i have used in our example, provides a free VPN service for its users with limited data usage every day.
