What is mass storage camera?

Activity Monitor showed Mass Storage Camera utilizing 99% of my cpu. I quit the app (?), after which my fan stopped (presumably, the app was heating up my Macbook Air). What is Mass Storage Camera, and why was it running?

MacBook Air, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4), Eating cpu

MassStorageCamera.app is a system application used by OS X. It is not intended to be used independently by users. In Mac OS X 10.9, the app is located in ./System/Library/ Image Capture/Devices. (I no longer have any OS X 10.8 Macs to check the location in 10.8.x.)

Unless you are an OS X expert, I strongly suggest you let Mac take care of it rather than you manipulating it manually in any way.

Because something was wrong.

My suggestions for a fix is to stop the process as you did, then restart your Mac.

Keeping your Mac software up to date and occasionally restarting Mac should keep the problem under control.
