In General... 3rd Party AV Software and Cleaning Utilities... tend to cause More Issues than they claim to fix...

They Not Required...

Mac OS X tends to look after itself.

Thanks for the link to Pref Setter. I've been hearing about it for ages, but never got it, since I have other programs for this, including Text W and XCode (Prop List Editor), but will check it out.

Just FYI, if you upgrade to Mavericks, Apple's Property List Editor app will no longer work, so by default opening a plist file will launch the new version of XCode. Kind of a PITA if all you want to do is check the contents of a plist file.

Also, another quirk in Mavericks is that plists are cached, so if you change the contents of one of them it may not "take" because the cached value could be written back to the file. A workaround is to use Terminal's defaults read command for the plist immediately after you modify it, which seems to force the cache to be updated.

Some fun, huh?

I have the same concern for the latest update (for version 2045), which still has not been downloaded to my system, & for any subsequent XProtect updates Apple releases in the future.

I am relieved to report that my system did finally download & install the version 2045 update, complete with the 'OSX.Abk.A' & the two CoinThief variant entries.

My install.log file indicates the download & install occurred less than 24 hours after it (with the ID 031-3414) started appearing in the background scan for updates. I'm not sure why I had to download the previous 2044 update manually (which for two plus days was showing up in the scans but not being downloaded), but my suspicions are that it has something to do with the App Store "Install system data files and security updates" preference not being enabled.

I can't be sure about that; however I do know the "ChineseWordlistUpdate.pkg" (ID 031-2660) was not downloaded until I enabled that preference option, & once I did that happened very quickly. So I'm thinking the 'Install' option is independent of the "Download newly available updates in the background" one, & while enabling that 'download' option will generate notifications for app updates, it does not apply to the system files the 'install' option governs, if that makes any sense.

BTW, the App Store preference is still telling me that software updates are available, but clicking the button to open the App Store to the "Updates" section (or going to that section any other way) still tells me that no updates are available. I have no idea what that means or why it is happening.

I started writing a lengthy reply last night, but was interrupted by Maintenance time. Now that it's finally updated I can address more important things.

I'm not sure either, but from what I'm seeing you weren't the only one. One of mine was late only because I was booting from a different system. I, for one, have been convinced for many months that "Install system data files and security updates" was the key. Recall back in the Snow Leopard days that this was how that was determined:

User uploaded file

It would seem that there is always a way to bypass OS X security. GateKeeper can be similarly disabled, except that it's obvious when you do so. With XProtect, it's not obvious and none of the help documentation really makes this clear.

The difference between SL and current options is that it doesn't seem that you can toggle the preference to cause an immediate update, which used to be the case. Guess I should file an enhancement request to bring this functionality back.

I saw that update in the catalog right after XProtect, but it has never been offered to me. Guess I need to figure that out.

Not certain I have ever observed that issue.

My App Store System Preference window:

User uploaded file

The relevant part of the App Store application window, after clicking on the "Show Updates" button, or launching the app from the Apple menu:

User uploaded file

It has been like this at least since the beginning of February. Probably longer, but that's when I first noticed it.

My Appstore Preferences window is overlayed over yours:

why is it different from yours? both are in 10.9.1 ?

I am running 10.9.1. As for the differences, you don't have the 'download in background' option checked like I do, but I don't know if that would make any difference for what the bottom part of the window displays.

All I know is I am not seeing the 'last check' text or "Check Now" button, just what is shown in my screen shot indicating (apparently incorrectly) that there are software updates available that I have not downloaded or installed.

EDIT: BTW, I don't know how much you care about such things, but you might want to obscure your Apple ID when you post screen shots that show it, like I did in my App Store preferences one.

Did you already restore (CMD R)?

I have not done a restore but I guess I should consider trying that. It can't hurt, apart from the time it takes.

Regarding the "Check Now" button, does anything change at all if you enable the 'download in background' setting?
