iTunes stops updating podcasts / iTunes has stopped updating this podcast because you have not listened to any episodes recently. Would you like to resume updating this podcast?

Hi,

My iTunes is set to automatically update podcasts and keep the last five episodes of each podcast.

However, iTunes appears to stop updating podcasts after several (five?) unwatched episodes and gives me an exclamation mark in the podcast overview. Clicking on that, I get the message: "iTunes has stopped updating this podcast because you have not listened to any episodes recently. Would you like to resume updating this podcast?"

This is not what I intend... and not what I told iTunes to do... (at least this my reading of the below settings)

This stopping is rather less then ideal: (1) if I am going away for two weeks, which I often do, I would still like to have the last five days of news, not the last five days of news back from the date I left, (2) I need to click update for approx. 20 podcast on regular basis, (3) my iPhone is synced to iTunes as soon as I come home, if iTunes does not have the podcasts downloaded, they are not copied over to the iPhone, and the iPhone will attempt to download the episodes via 3G next time I play the podcast on the go, (4) I am mainly using iTunes functions, such as smart playlists and podcasts, through another app (Plex, a fullscreen media player) and it is a pain to have to go to iTunes to manually do things. That is why this bothering me...

How can I get iTunes to behave as intended? (From reading through old posts I know that there is a Doug script adressing this problem, which I have just set up, but I would prefer to use internal settings if possible... maybe I am just missing a setting)

Thank you for your ideas!

I wouldn't be surprised if there was an "improvement" to iTunes that didn't make things wore. Sometimes the changes are invisible. But the ones I notice certainly have always done so. This last interface change might have been the worst.

I say that as a person who does not wish to subscribe to a music service, and who has stopped buying books from Apple, because it's hard to make sure Apple books don't have DRM.

But I don't know if I can get out. Too many things are dependent upon it.

I only listen to podcasts on my iPod nano. I download them in iTunes and copy them to the nano as this is the only way to do it. iTunes never considers this copy as a listen so I get the stupid 'iTunes has stopped...' message all the time. I also have music playlists and photos on my device and I never sync. I don't use the Cloud as the nano has no wifi and I see no point in running the battery down on my phone to listen to music and podcasts. I need the phone to make phone calls (I know—retro). All I want is for iTunes to let me manage my files the way I want to manage them without their help. As Apple has made iTunes my only option, I don't think this is asking too much. As soon as I can find a robust and reliable alternative, I will take it.

I've been leaving feedback about this irritating problem for years, but I don't expect Apple to make a coding change affecting millions of people because of one dopey guy with an iPhone (that dopey guy being me, not Daniel 🙂). But if enough of us complain at https://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html maybe they'll listen. So if anyone reading this hasn't left feedback, please click on the link and vent!

I suggest posting a bug report at <https://bugreport.apple.com/> where you can file this under 'unexpected behavior'. As that is exactly what it is. They application indicates that it will download 'All Episodes' and it does not. The bug reports may (or may not) get taken slightly more seriously and this is a classic case where the bug can be solved by either indicating this 'feature' or providing a toggle or 'fixing' the bug. The more bug reports files the higher the problem is 'voted up' as I understand it.

this is really annoying.

i download my podcasts on my macbook, and transfer them to my ipod where i listen to them. therefore, itunes thinks i don't listen to any of my podcasts.

i keep getting screwed out of episodes of this american life because they are only free on the week they premier. after that, you have to pay. so when i open itunes (which i only do periodically when i have time to think about podcasts) and see that my podcasts have stopped updating, i miss out on the very podcasts which i opened itunes to retrieve.

this is stupid.
