Macbook Case Has cracked

I noticed just the other day that my casa has started to split. Very strange considering i haven't ddroped it or anything. Other people have even dropped theres before but i have never heard anyone who has had a crack in theire cover. I am going to try and explain now where the crack is.

Just under the left wrist rest where that ends on the side then you have about 1 or 2 cms of plastic. There is a line straight down. the crack is not open but it is a crack. I have also noticed that all along that border where like the top surface meets the plastic is all uneven the line goes in and out.

This issue and the white casing discoloration problem have held me back from purchasing a MacBook.

What I would like to know but have yet to ascertain is... does the cracking remain limited to 2006 Core Duo models or are newer Core 2 units afflicted as well? It might paint a clear picture as to whether the problem has been resolved.

As it stands now I don't feel safe buying a MacBook. Since we are now approaching Q2 I may hold off for a revision to the product line.

After coming home from class yesterday, I noticed a crack right above the IR light (eerily similar to the pictures posted by Andreas). After class today, I brought my macbook into the Apple Store. They had a part in stock and repaired the top case under the warranty (replaced the entire top case, including keyboard & track pad). I was in and out in under 30 minutes.

I think it must be a combination of design flaw in some units (no way to pinpoint which ones, models, etc) and the fact that some people use their computers more aggressively than others. For instance, maybe some people put weight down on the palmrest area that other's don't. However, you really should be able to do that kind of thing, and I know if I do on mine it's fine, doesn't crack, etc. or seem like it's gonna crack.

So the answer must be only some models are afflicted with this... Maybe one out of every thousand or more.

Keep that in mind and don't let it hold you back from getting the Mac you want! Most issues on here I have read about and think they are mainly a few machines here and there. These forums are for people who need help, so there's an over-abundance of issues on here, just don't let that fool you. There are thousands more Mac users out there (like myself) who have had no issues at all!

Good luck to all...

I recently noticed a similar crack on the right side of the palm rest above the IR sensor. I called apple about this problem last Monday, received a box on Tuesday, shipped it out on Wednesday at 6 p.m. and received it back Friday morning at 8 a.m. They also fixed a small creak in the hinge while they had it.

This is my first mac and I will never go back to PCs. Apple is simply amazing!

Many people seem to be having the same problem in similar spots. Looking at the top case where the lid shuts on those two little bumps on the bezzle, is it possible those two little bumps are causeing th plastic seperation in the spot that they shut down on? I have indents where they sit when the Mac is closed, and it is somewhat hard, or rath an inconvieniance to shut the mac gently as the magnets rip it shut.

Just a thought. Alot of pictures I have seen suggest those specific cracks could be caused by those two small bezzle supports.

That is the suggested cause of the problem in this thread. It really appears to be a design flaw. Apple wanted a sleek, cool, sophisticated notebook with no buttons on the exterior. Voila, magnets and little bumps to keep the lid slightly off the keyboard. That is their DESIGN. The fact that the pressure imparted on the lower case causes the plastic to crack is the FLAW.

I can't believe when you read this thread that Apple tries to throw this back on the user.

As a precautionary step, I use the slim pad that came between the screen and the keyboard in the packaging whenever I close my Macbook. It is a small hassle, and looks like I am one of those overly cautious computer people (which I probably am), but it would seem that it would help.

Best,
AB

Mine too. Not 'above the IR thing' but on the corresponding area on the left side of the palmrest. Unfortunately the crack grew to be over an inch long, snagged on my clothing, snapped off, and now there's a gap going into the inside of the case. Whew - looks like it could be a hazard...

So, is this a problem that apple is willing to fix?

Apple will repair broken plastics, as long as it wasn't an accident caused by you. If damage was caused during normal usage (normal being what they talk about in the user manual) then they will in fact replace the plastics in that 1st year limited hardware warranty. Call AppleCare and find out, but make sure you have your story straight the first time!
