Backups are either done via iTunes to the computer or with iCloud. That decision is yours. See this support document to try and decide. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5262


Backups on the computer are in different locations depending on the operating system on the computer. They are not files you can just browse, that are a special SQLite file that requires special software to view. See this support document for location and other backup information. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4946
