Your iMac has a mini-displayport socket, not Thunderbolt, but both use the same physical socket. Thunderbolt sockets on a Mac have a lightning-bolt symbol next to them. The symbol for a mini-displayport is a square with two vertical lines either side.
You can plug a mini-displayport monitor into a Thunderbolt socket and it will work, but you can't plug a Thunderbolt device into a mini-displayport.

Thunderbolt connections were not introduced until 2011. Your machine doesn't have it.
Well that is odd - there is a physical port for it on the back of my machine. And the spec sheet for my purchase says there is one.
