Still stymied by -8003

I've downloaded 'trash it' and that do the job. All my data [music, images, files] are on an external drive. When I disconnect that drive, the trash is empty. reconnecting it brings the full trash back. Can I get to the trash file on the external drive? Both the external data drive and my laptop are backed up thru time machine.
