FaceTime suddenly stopped working

When I first set up FaceTime on this Mavericks install (first time ever using FaceTime, I'm not sure if this is important) it worked fine for a while, but has recently just stopped working altogether. The Apple troubleshooting page suggests going into FaceTime preferences and fixing some options, but the option to get at FaceTime preferences is greyed out for me.

When I log into FaceTime, it asks for my username and password, then asks which accounts I would like to use with FaceTime (I have two options: my @icloud.com address, and the address I use as my apple id. I've tried leaving only one of them selected to no avail). When I click next after making sure one or both of my accounts is set ti sign in, FaceTime says "Verifying" for a while before going back to the username/password step with no error message whatsoever.

I'm running Mavericks with all of the latest updates installed on a late 2009 MBP with a 3.6 Ghz Core 2 Duo with 4 gigs of ram in case system specs are important.

Hi,

It only applies to the Version that could be downloaded for Snow Leopard (it was not part of the original Install).

There is not OS X 10.9.x update yet to take it above OS X 10.9.2 or any standalone updates.

Hi Marc,

If you are getting that particular error message then the only recourse is to call Apple.

The people who saw this in Mountain Lion had the "non specific thing" done to their accounts and it worked.

Whilst you can Enable an iPhone Number to join iMessages and also Add an Apple ID via any Apple product capable of iMessages there seems to be no certain way to remove them from the server.

By Implication of the way it sometimes fails it seems turning off an iPhone for Messages will, eventually, after the passage of some time, remove the iPhone number which will then disappear on other devices (or at least not work).

The removal of an Apple ID seem less clear.

There are two possibles that I can think of.

The iPhone number has been registered either without or the wrong Country code.

Similarly any "Coding" of country or region may have been attributed to the Apple ID.

There are probably other things that cannot be done by the end user that need th Apple Support people to sort out.
