Trouble connecting to VPN while outside local network

Hi,

I have setup a VPN on OS X Server and opened all the ports (Airport had this already put in for some reason) and I am using No-IP as the address and I can connect to the VPN within the local network using the No-IP address but when I go outside of the address and I have the ports point towards my Mac Mini running OS X Server (with Mavericks) but when I try to connect outside of the local network I get "The PPTP-VPN server did not repond. Try reconnecting. If the problem continues, verify your settings and contact your Administrator." this also happens for L2TP-VPN aswell.

Any help would be greatly apreciated I need this setting up ASAP as I need to be able to have an external office connecting to here so I can back up their Mac's locally.

Hi Bruce

I start from the beginning.

Delete your DNS settings. Create a A record named the same way as your domain name from noip.

IE bruce.no-ip.bic

Now you create a machine record (your computer name, for my case "server")

Your hostname is now server.bruce.no-ip.biz

In the VPN section where your hostname is written delete the first part server. leave only bruce.no-ip.biz

generate the profile, add it to your iPhone or so.

When you test it, you need to be outside your network. Tell me if that worked for you.

Hi,

Ok now I understand just one more question what shall I point the IP to? my local IP 192.168.0.2? or my external IP?

What is the error message you receive?

With what device are you testing it?

Hi,

The error message that I get is shown in the second post and I am testing it on an iPhone, I've tested on an iMac at home and I still get the same responce.

Ok, are you using a Airport Extreme or what kind of router?

I had the same message in the beginning, tha I changed the secred question to common special characters like @$-% I had some others and it was to long. Try that too.

Hi,

The router I am using is an Airport Timecapsual and I tried adding special characters in and I still got the same error message.

just try a very simple one

to add my pennies (cent) worth first off establish if mydomain.no-ip.org is pointing to your WAN adress

first in terminal do a

dig mydomain.no-ip.org inset your bit into mydomain

this will return the address given by the no-ip server then in browser go to http://www.whatsmyip.org

if the two addresses their match then the problem reside with the routing on the Airport.

Lets deal with that first

hmm never noticed that before no-ip is point to a different IP to what Whats My IP? is not sure how that is working, will have a test with my IP shown Whats My IP? and report back ASAP

using the IP shown on whats my ip it still is coming back with the same error so I am not sure what is going on there.

the question I have is I realise that the Airport is your router but if you look at its setting its IP should show as the whatsmyip see my Airport shows its on my LAN

My No-IP app shows the same as the IPv4 address wich is not a 192.168.0 address and whats my IP does not match anything on my airport.

Could it be todo with the fact I have a satalite router prior to the airport?
