Late 2009 Mac Mini freezing

I've had my trusty Mac Mini for a few years now and it has been very reliable....... until Mavericks.

Not long after installing Mavericks I have eperienced freezing and crashing. I assumed this was a memory issue so upgraded my standard 2GB to 2 x 4GB (8GB total) and it actually helped.

All was fine until about a week ago, so now it is frezing more and more, even though it shows there is plenty of free memory. I use Memory Clean to monitor this and one way I can get out of a freeze is to flush the memory, but I'm sure this can't be good.

I think it is a software issue but don't know where to look.

Can someone help please?

It's probably CleanMyMac that is the problem. CleanMyMac is crapware. Crapware is anything that purports to "optimize", "clean", "accelerate", "monitor", or "protect" your Mac. These apps are unnecessary, poorly written, overpriced (if they were free, they'd still be overpriced), and harmful. They can damage your OS and be difficult to uninstall. I'd uninstall CleanMyMac and then see how your Mac behaves. How To Uninstall CleanMyMac 2? Complete Removal of Mac Apps

Memory Clean sounds like crapware too.

Macs can take care of themselves. Maintenance software is already built into OSX. Macs don't need third-party utilities to be running all the time in the background. The people who sell this garbage know this, but people keep buying it, so they keep selling it. Apple recommends that developers not use background processes in their apps.

Google Keystone Agent is a frequent flyer on these discussions for slowing down Macs by excessive phoning home. I'd get rid of that too. HOWTO: Remove Google Software Update on Mac OS X - Raam Dev

CleanMyMac (which should really be called TakeABigShitOnMyMac) is known for damaging the OS beyond a simple repair, so you may have to backup your documents, erase your HD, and do a clean install of Mavericks (i.e., not from a backup).

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

Step 1

Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar.

Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time after you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.

If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.

When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.

Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

Step 2

Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post any other kind of report — it will be very long and not helpful.

Thanks to both for your help.

Arthur -

I removed CleanMyMac2 but there still appears to be some leftovers and I think the damage may have already been done.

The startup drive is failing, or there is some other hardware fault. Everyhing else is irrelevant.

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.

Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional — ask if you need guidance.

If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair

Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.

*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

Thanks, not what I wanted to hear but at least I have an idea of the problem. Most things I have backed up on an external drive and just use the internal for system files and apps.

The latest log did mke me wonder if it was something more sinister though -
