I am thinking about getting new phone but want to find out if notes will be saved in backup so it will transfer to new phone. does anyone know if this is possible?

Yep! I still got notes all the way back from iOS 2.2.1. Keeps with all backups!
If you back up to your computer using iTunes, notes is included in the backup. If you back up to iCloud be sure to sync your notes with iCloud and they will sync to your new phone when you sign into your iCloud account.
