Is Logic Pro the Best Audio Recording Software for Mac?

Couple questions. I do a lot of audio production and work currently. I use a gateway with Cubase, and its not bad, but I feel like I need something mroe high end.

I'm looking at the 17 inch Imac. Does anyone record using this computer? How's it sound? Is there any way to put in a new soundcard or something if i don't like the current one?

Secondly, is logic pro the most advanced and best audio recording software for the mac? Are there others as well?

I know about Pro Tools, but it seems like there isn't anything high end enough that is TOO high end.

Does the Pro version have superior mixing capabilties. I am primarily going to be micing a guitar amp and having a mixer run into a firewire port, and also using a preamp for my guitar direct into the computers USB.

Lastly, how are the mixing features on Logic Pro vs. Logic Express? I do a lot of post production mixing as well, and use VST plugins. Speaking of that, will it accomodate using a drum program like BFD through VST or Midi like Cubase will?

Thanks for your time guys.

hi there,

see that you've gotten some great advice so far and
I'm certainly not trying to turn you off to logic (I
use it everyday for music), but there is a valid
reason why protools is dominating the
post-production world. Protools imports omf files
flawlessly. Logic does not. If you are planning to
recieve avid made omf files from your video editor,
I would highly recommend that you conisder protools
LE with the DV toolkit.

Just my opinion.

all the best,

I was hoping that you would explain the flaws that Logic
has with OMF files, since there are menu commands for
import and export. I do not use this feature but I always
want to hear details because many problems people have
with the program are due to unfamiliarity with it. It does
seem that you may be a newer user since you have only
recently joined the forum.

Hi MegaMustaine:

I like this Subject!!haa...

i just want to give you 'Confident',Steve Job won't invest something useless for Mac future!!

In other word,Pro Tools is just a software who use Mac Platform to fulfill the Software needs...

But,Logic Pro/Express are totally different thing...Logic is a software that bought from Mac and they do a lot of modification to fit Mac Platform's 'tracks'...

I've used Cubase SX before switched to Logic. It's Good...after using Logic...i s'ld say Excellent stuff!!

For MIDI,For Audio Recording even Mix and Mastering...i personally, like it so much!!

Good Plug-in,Good Sampler!!

If you like Sounds (loops or audio software),jampacks are really nice things...somebody will catogarize that isn't a pro sound..but,if you are engineer...you'll know..after processing/tweak on it...it'll be a nice thing(my own opinion)!!

I've put my Cubase totally away from my Computer!!

Enjoy!!cheers...

hey phillip,

I've been using logic for around 4 years and protools for around 6 years. Not a new user, just never posted here before. : ) The main problems with OMF files in logic is the import... seems that logic doesn't really want to do it! There are a number of different problems that happen, a search of the logic-users egroups forum will probably show you what I mean (apple probably deleted the posts here). Logic doesn't seem to have problems exporting OMFs. Although I must say I've barely had to export OMFs from logic. I know that there are a few options, and believe me I've tryed everything. I work in a post-production facility in NYC so I've had tons of OMF files to test. I've tested OMFs from protools (digitranslator), avids, avid express, and final cut pro. Occasionally, logic will open an OMF with no problems, but the OMF import capabilities of logic are very dodgy... to the point where I would say unusable. It's been an issue with logic for the last few years and not too much has been done to resolve it. thing is, when you are working to picture, editors almost always deliver the sequence as an omf, which protools will handle beautifully.

that being said, I haven't tryed in logic 7.2 yet.... maybe they cleared out some of the bugs.

cheers,

Lou Teti
