Lacie drive keeps disconnecting

Since upgrading to Mavericks, almost every time my Mac awakens from sleep mode, it says my Lacie drive was not ejected properly. I have to unplug it each time & reconnect it, plus I have to close down I-Photo & reload it.

Has anyone had a similar problem and if so how did you solve this?

Many thanks

Stephen

Same problem here. iMac and Sierra. LaCie 12TB 2big Thunderbolt 2. Also brand new. Volume disconnects itself without any apparent reason and I get a message saying I shouldn't have disconnected it without ejecting first.

But also, I am having major difficulties writing to it. It isn't possible to copy whole folders over to it. The LaCie baulks both at folder and individual files, usually claiming an error -50 but sometimes other 2 digit error numbers. Other times it says there is an error in a particular file such as the format of its title

I use a Thunderbold cable and it only happens when I wake the computer from sleep. I have tried unplugging the thunderbolt cable and I have tried unplugging the power cable but it still repeats the problem. I never had an issue with this before I upgraded to Mavericks but now it happens all of the time.

When you say don't sleep your Thunderbolt, how can I do this?

Hi PlotinusVeritas

I too have this problem with the LaCie 2Big 8TB drive arrays, of which I have two. They are connected via thunderbolt to a Mac Pro running Mavericks.

I opened a case with Apple and they called me to advise that the problem was that the drives were not spinning up fast enough.

LaCie, on the other hand, say that "despite thousands of sleep/wake cycles" they were unable to reproduce the problem - though it is clearly illustrated in the logs and they do not dispute that it occurs.

So when you say "it is being looked into" can you advise by whom and for how long?

I would appreciate some information - I have asked LaCie for a return authorisation and am awaiting their response.

Is anyone having trouble with the Lacie 2Big 6TB thunderbolt drive disconnecting? It is a TB2 drive and I have it connected directly to my MBP via thunderbolt. I had not expected this type of trouble with such an expensive drive. Even my WD TB drive stays connected! oh yes, I am running ElCapitan OS

I had this issue in 2014 - see my earlier post. I spent a lot of time troubleshooting this issue with LaCie in Sydney and then with LaCie Head Office and with Apple.

I have to say that the support from LaCie was absolutely woeful. The emphasis was on denial that the problem existed, despite many similar problems on various chat sites.

I never got LaCie to admit that this was their problem - even after taking the drives to an Apple Store and reproducing the problem on one of their Macs.

I returned them as "not fit for purpose" to the distributor.

I purchased the Pegasus2 R4 drive array and installed 6TB drives and have had no problem since.

A couple of useful points:

The problem usually occurred if the drives or the Mac went to sleep. But there were also random disconnects at other times. Once one drive disconnected, all disconnected. Apple were adamant that this was a LaCie issue. The lack of problems since installing the Pegasus array seems to confirm that. Also the post below suggests that the LaCie issue is in the driver.

LaCie Head Office told me (eventually) that they were unable to reproduce the problem over hundreds of sleep cycles. However it turned out that they had no thunderbolt 2 devices to test this with (I have a Mac Pro) so were using older Macs with TB1.

I am not surprised that the problem still occurs. It is not MAC OS related - I was running OSX 10.8 originally and upgraded to 10.9 during this time but it made no difference.

The problem does not occur when the drives are connected via USB3 (but this is a much slower connection).

In this post the users are having exactly the same issue with Drobo drives. The solution, in this case, was a firmware update from Drobo.
