In Keynote 6 how do you fit slideshow to the audio?
It seems very complicated to adjust the total lenght to the embedded audio and so far I have only succeeded by adjusting the length of the slides when converting to a quick time movie, however, it still does not fit.

There is no automatic adjustment, but this is a very simple procedure.
If you know the duration of the music and the number of slides you can work out roughly the value to enter in the delay. Human intervention is needed to provide what looks right rather than what calculations provide.
Play the presentation twice and you will have the presentation working.
click a slide in the navigator panel
in the navigator: setup > presentation > normal
edit > select all
in the animate tab of inspector, set start transition to automatically, and the delay to the time that each slide will be shown.
If set to 1.00 secs, each slide will show for 1 second.
Adjust this delay to shorten the duration of the slides to match the music.
In other words - it is not possible to fit the slideshow to the music automatically.
As I understand you this is a trial and error exercise. :-(

Depends which procedure you are using; a recorded narration, adding a single file to the soundtrack or placing individual files on each slide. The additional issue of many users finding it difficult exporting to QuickTime wont make it any easier.
Post back more information on what your trying to do.
I created a slideshow consisting of 15 slices and added a piece of music as underlaying audio. The slideshow is somewhat 45 seconds longer than the music and I would like to make the slideshow fit the music. There is an instruction that indicate you can do this, however, it is impossible for me to find that option or it simply does not exist in my version of Keynote. I have the latest update of Keynote which says version 6.1
No automatic adjustment is just the problem. As far as I know does this option exist i Power Point and that's why I'm missing it in Keynotes.
I've followed your instruction and succeeded in fitting my slideshow to the music, but this all fails if I export the slide show to a Quicktime movie that can be played by others that does not have Apple systems.
Here I again have to try to fix the timings when saving the slideshow and it is therefore a bit cumbersome and time consuming to make a perfect presentation.
