Buy an external drive and use CD burning software. Apple didn't introduce Disc Burner until after Mac OS 9.1, and if your computer shipped with 9.0.4 or earlier, it didn't include a CD burner.

oh well im never going to update it i found the soft ware i need but i need to initlize the hard drive b ut i cand do that unless booted from a disk is there any way i can install the mac os right from the computers hard drive?
If you're installing a free updater, you don't need to and cannot erase the internal drive. If you're installing a paid OS upgrade, it'll be on a disk.

Apple offered full retail releases of 9.0, 9.0.2, 9.0.4, 9.1, 9.2.1. They all looked the same except for the black text indicating the operating system on the disk in fine print on one side. They all had the orange 9 logo on white background. And they did not say Upgrade, OEM, or Dropin. You need to properly identify your iMac, before choosing the version of the retail release to buy:
