How do I fix a WAN IP address clash when setting up airport extreme connected to modem/router in bridge mode

I have a netcomm router NB604N that is connected to my internet via an adsl connection. I have set the router/modem into bridge mode and it has an ip address of 192.168.1.1. I have connected an airport extreme via an ethernet cable from the netcomm modem/router to the WAN port of the airport extreme. When I then go into the airport network settings and try to set the router mode to DHCP + NAT it tells me there is a clash with the WAN IP address of the router and shows a DHCP address range from 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.200.

How do I fix this - do I need to set a DHCP reservation with the address of the modem (ie 192.168.1.1) or the airport extreme (which has a IPv4 address of 192.168.1.6). I can't see what the WAN IP address of the airport extreme is.

Note that I have previously had the airport extreme in bridge mode but I would like to connect network drives off the airport extreme rather than the netcomm modem and the physical setup in my home makes it better for to do this.

The TC has gone from bridge to router with the wrong IP address..

So you need to first factory reset the TC. This will not harm your backups.

Universal Factory Reset.. any model TC or AE.

Unplug your TC/AE from power or turn off at the power point.

Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on.. all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. (this is often difficult without a 2nd person or a 3rd arm).

Release it when the status light flashes rapidly. If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have missed it and try again.

Note..

Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel.. add no more pressure after that.

TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations of the router.

No files are deleted on the hard disk in a TC.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.

When you setup the TC after the factory reset it should automatically detect your WAN configuration is now PPPOE.. if not you will need to manually configure it.

The IP range will revert to the Apple default, 10.0.1.1 and subsequent IP.

You will put in your ISP username and password for the pppoe login.

And using Mavericks I strongly suggest you do not follow the apple recommended names.. change to SMB naming.. short,, less than 20 characters.. less than 10 even better. No spaces and pure alphanumeric.

Eg a good name for your TC.. TCgen5 and that is also a good name for the wireless. Unless you want to name each band in which case TC24ghz and TC5ghz suit nicely.. examples only but please stick to the principles.

You will need to reset your TM to the new target name.. but that should not be any major issue and the TM should pickup the old backups and continue from there.
