How do I load epub books that I already own onto my iPad

I have many books that are in epub format, some that I created myself, and others I obtained from non-apple sources. How do I add these to iBooks and how do I control what is visible on my mac, my iphone, and my ipad. All should be visible from my mac, but only some from iphone or ipad and they may be different lists depending on what they are.

MacBook Air, OS Mavericks

If they don't have digital rights management on them then you can add them to the iBooks app on your Mac via File > Add To Library.

You can then sync them to a device by connecting it to your Mac, selecting it on the left-hand sidebar of your Mac's iTunes (option-command-S will get the sidebar to show), and using the Books tab on the right-hand side of the iTunes screen to select and sync the epubs to the iBooks app on the device.

Not sure what you mean by 'visible'. You use your Mac's iTunes to select which ones to sync to a device, if you sync it then it will accessible in the device's iBooks app.

Books are not even visible in the iTunes library. Even the books I have purchased are no longer there, let alone the ones that I have authored or obtained through other sources let alone from the iTune store. Audiobooks are still there, but no documents at all, pdf, eBook, or otherwise. option-command-S does not allow the addition of anything other than the default items. iTunes no longer offers ANY control over which pdf or what books sync with anything.

Have you added the books to the iBooks app on your Mac ? With Mavericks you add and control your books library via the new iBooks app, it's not longer done within iTunes itself.

When you connect a device and select it on the left-hand sidebar of your Mac's iTunes you should get the same set of tabs that you used to get prior to Mavericks, including a Books tab for selecting which books and/or audiobooks to sync to the device e.g.

That Books tab should show the ibooks / epubs / PDFs that you have in your Mac's iBooks app

I guess this partially solves the problem in a very un-ellegant way. I have to add the books to iBooks instead of iTunes now, but I still have to go back to iTunes and sort through all those icons to find the book and put a checkmark in it for every single book I want at the time. No longer do I have the option of making convenient lists and adding groups by a single check list or smart lists based on tags I have placed in the comments section. They really screwed this up.
