Using multiple Presonus Inspire 1394's with GB

I've bought 2 Inspire 1394's to use with GB as i want to record discussions/debates for a podcast we're doing. I have 4 x B2-Pro microphones that i want to record. Each Inspire has 2 x XLR inputs. However, in GB (and also Audio/Midi setup) I can only select one of the two Inspire's for the "Input". The problem in GB is that when i select "channel 1" as the given input on a track, it won't know which Inspire channel 1 is related to.

If anyone has experience in using multiple Inspire 1394's with GB, then it'd be great to hear from you!

Cheers,

Grant.

Hi HangTime,

Thanks for the info and it worked! Excellent. My only issue now is how to monitor ALL four microphones at once. That is, i want to be able to hear everyone talking through my headphones. I've tried using both the aggregated and built-in devices for the "audio output" but with no luck. Each Inspire also has a headphone jack for zero latency monitoring, but when i use this on the unit that's plugged into the computer i can only hear the sound from microphones plugged into that device, and not from the 2nd Inspire.

Ah, interesting question.

To the best of my knowledge it shouldn't make a difference if you used two FireWire ports or daisychained them together. But since I don't have access to a pair of Inspires (and their control software) I can't say with absolute certainty. Perhaps the OP will pass through to answer your question definitively.

It'd be pretty cool if the Inspires automatically configured themselves to act as one, but in the end, since creating an aggregate device is a one time thing, it's hardly a show stopper either way. If it does: plug them in, select the interface, and your done. If it doesn't, plug them in, create the Aggy device, select it, and you're done.

Either way, my feeling is that you can't go wrong with a PreSonus product.

Hi everyone,

I'm using a 17" MacBook Pro and it only has one Firewire 400 port, so i can't test if plugging in each Inspire separately does anything differently from daisy-chaining them.

However, i seem to have everything working well now. Once you have created the aggregated device, (and selected it in GB prefs as the input device) each track in GB will show 8 channels of input. However, make sure when you create the aggregated device that it's sampling rate is 44.1K. The Inspire can record up to 96K, but i seemed to have problems when i used a sampling rate higher than 44.1K. It's a pity that Presonus don't tell you about this extra step, but i suppose that's what forums like this are for!!

I'm using these for podcasting and it'll be great to be able to do panel discussions using the four microphones, all being recorded onto separate tracks.

Thanks to HangTime for the info.

Cheers,

Grant.
