Updating from Leopard to Mavericks
My friend's macbook is from 2008 and she has not updated to Snow Leopard. Can she now update to Mavericks? What's the process?

No. You must upgrade to Snow Leopard in order to download anything after that.
Purchase Snow Leopard install DVD from Apple.
