How to reset my iMac but keep current OS?

Hello all.

I have an early 2008 24" iMac that I want to reset to factory setting but still retaining the current OS. Since I've had this computer for a number of years, I have updated OS versions several times. Some via DVD, some through downloads, most version upgrades I paid for except for the latest one which came as free donwload (10.9). I'm about to buy me a new model and passing this one along (it will stay home) but I dont want any of my personal data, apps and file to be left behind.

If I reset to factory settings to the original version (OS 10.5 Leopard, I believe) do I have to reinstall all versions in between the original OS and the current? how would i do it without having to pay again for all of the required versions to be able to install the most recent one?

Is there a way to completely reset it but keep the current OS? If not possible, what other options do I have? Sorry for so many doubts!

Thank you all for your assistance and suggestions.

Fabian

According to the licensing agreement, you need to wipe your drive and reinstall the original OS; so, follow Niel's advice and reinstall Leopard; you cannot pass it on with the current OS as the license is not transferable - they will need to download it using their own Apple ID.
