iTunes 11.1.4.62 freezes while syncing with Outlook

Hi,

After installing iTunes 11.1.4.62 syncing my iPod Touch (4th gen - iOS 6.1.6) with Outlook 2010 no longer works (I'm using Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate). The syncing process hangs while "preparing to sync" or while "syncing calendars". Strangely enough, uninstalling / cleaning / reinstalling iTunes makes the problem disappears... for just one Windows session. After a reboot, the problem re-appears and there's no way to sync again until I uninstall / clean / re-install.

The device is always recognized by iTunes when connected. No problem.

When the synchronization process freezes (or waits forever) I can sometimes cancel the operation. Very often, I have to kill the iTunes process.

Any know fix ?

Thanks in advance.

Deleting this variable is done by invoking the System applet from the Control Panel. Then you have to click on "Advanced System Settings". In the dialog box that is opened, click on "Environment variables". In the new dialog box that is opened, one can find the ESET_OPTIONS variable in the "System variables" section. Just select it, click Delete and then OK. Close everything and reboot.

🙂 Many thanks, that's lovely.

Hi everybody,

FYI

According to an ESET representative, the ESET_OPTIONS environment variable is not a bug :

it is not a buggy option, it's there on purpose and by removing it you deactivated one of the new protection enhancements. We were able to reproduce the issue in our environment and analyze it. Eventually it turned out to be a bug in iTunes which causes the issue. We have a workaround for the iTunes bug prepared for testing.

I got it working. Here's what I did

1) I uninstalled iTunes, Apple Application Support, and Apple Mobile Device Support

2) went to \roaming\Apple Computer\ and renamed the SyncServices folder

3) in \roaming\Apple Computer\Preferences\ I renamed OutlookSyncClient.exe.plist

4) I rebooted and started Apple Software update. It wanted into update QuickTime and Install iTunes. I let it.

5) without a reboot, i connected my iPhone. iTunes started and did it's usual crap and synced fine but the Info sheet was unchcecked.

6) I checked the info sheet and hit "apply". contacts synced fine. got totally stuck on calendar.

7) I stopped the sync, unchecked just the calendar to see if i could get it to do a "delete on phone" sync. still got stuck. i cancelled the sync.

8) i opened the newest log in here Roaming\Apple Computer\Logs and started reading. the complaint i found had to do with a malformed path value. which is interesting since this did not happen before this whole mess began.

9) i researched issues with my system having, you know, a really long path and found that it kind of did. i.e., over 2048 characters which some applications find irritating -- even if that is a pretty ridiculous thing. in other words, if windows is fine with it, why is any of the software (e.g. SyncServices) business how long the thing is and where does he get off taking leave to restrict it on his end? outrageous!

10) anyway, by hook and by crook, i substantially shorten my path environment variable with no loss of items in the path by substituting the short names for everything. i also removed zombie items. With all that I had a path of about 1800 characters -- surely he would be accepted into the kingdom of Apple?

11) rebooted

12) no luck, but a new error emerged. this one spoke of a failed response on a pipe. it looked like this: 029E5278 1476 (distnoted.exe) windows_msg - Error getting overlapped result for named pipe: 109

13) after some googling, i found that, somehow, there could be a .dll conflict between SyncServices and one of my programming editors, UltraEdit.

14) So, i ended up removing something like "C:\Program Files (x86)\IDM Computer Solutions\UltraEdit" from my user path (and system path if it was there).

15) rebooted -- btw, at this reboot, i allowed windows update to apply a service pack to Office 2010 64-bit so this might have "straightened out" anything amiss in the Outlook stuff -- hard to say for sure.

16) now it all works.

17) last thing. the iTunes i now have installed is 11.1.5.5 -- it's what the website gave me.

I put all this in here in the hope that it will be useful to some of you but I have my doubts about that. There are so many ways for iTunes syncing of Outlook on Windows to fail that i sort of feel like this stuff is pretty idiopathic. Although i will admit that i got a clue here and there from tangentially related issues of late. At this point, i had 2 successful syncs of my calendar this morning. i'm gonna leave it there and go to work. I'll post back here if it misbehaves more tonight. Thanks, all.

FINALLY FIGURED IT OUT !!!!!!!!!

Problem in Outlook - I'm using Win7 and Outlook 2007...

Open Outlook 2007 and go to: Tools-Trust Center-Add ins...

Next: iTunes Outlook Addin AND Outlook Change Notifier were inactive and also Disabled. Change setting so that BOTH are ACTIVE !!!

Close Outllok and relaunch, then check setttings to make sure they have been modified correctly...

Open iTunes and make sure in Info: Sync Calendars with Outlook is checked...

FINALLY syncing properly and tested 1/2 dozen times...

I did some more testing today with calendar entries created both on the phone and in outlook prior to sync and then sync'ed. Then i deleted both in outlook and sync'ed again. all worked perfectly. and, the Contacts/Calendar part of the sync process is almost instantaneous. I believe that my system suffered for a long time with UltraEdit in the execution path. In fact, it might be that even when this worked in a feeble way as it has for 2+ years -- i.e. sometimes it would work and sometimes it wouldn't but it never crashed the sync outright -- it was the conflict with UltraEdit that was the cause. Maybe if SyncServices "answered" fast enough before the other .dll it would actually work. Anyway, I'm done. I solve problems for a living that are WAY more interesting (to me) than this crap. Good luck to you all. I'm out. Thanks.

Having struggled for several days with no calendar, wiping my iphone and ipad and restoring them, removing all the Apple software from the PC etc. etc. along much web searching, I finally rebuilt the software on my PC from scratch.

Always a longer job than you expect!

Booted up and synced without an issue. Then today I reinstalled eSet and the sync clendar issue returned.

Initially I did not realise that it was the eSet that caused the problem. Then I found this thread and tried the suggested solution.

BINGO!

I don't profess to understand why, but deleting the eSet variable worked for me. Many thanks

Did you have to uninstall the Eset product? Or was the deletion just of the environment variable? If the latter, could you walk us through how you went about it?

No, I didn't have to uninstall ESET. Just deleting the variable was not enough, though. I had to reboot the system.
