What am I doing wrong?

What am I doing wrong? I just purchased Snow Leopard MacOS X to reinstall on my Macbook Pro 15in. I want to erase my hard drive but it's not working. I'm doing the steps as outlined in the manual but when I restart all I get is the grey screen then the apple logo. I've waited for 5 minutes and then had to force quit.

Is there some small step that I'm missing? I apologize in advance if I have posted this inthe wrong forum.

Some questions, mostly to help me get my mind back to specifics.

1. Do you remember when you bought this computer?

2. You bought Snow Leopard recently. Why?

3. What problems did you have before you bought SL?

4. Have you tried starting the computer without the disk in the drive?

5. When you last ran the computer, was the disk drive working?

I bought the computer about 3 or 4 years ago. I wanted to give my computer to my brother and wanted to restore the computer to the factory settings. I also got a message saying my amazon and yahoo account may have been comprimised. My sister started getting some weird emails saying they were from me but they weren't so she didn't open them and deleted them. When I try to open my Facebook page, for example it doesn't open, my yahoo mail does the same thing and if I want to order something from Sears it won't let me order anything. I can go to the Sears site though. Then there's the missing System Preferences. When I try to open it,it doesn't open. I've searched everywhere and they are m.i.a.

Yes, the computer runs without the disk and I can go to some of my sites without any problems.

If it's ok with you, we won't bother with the Safari and other issues, since you plan to wipe everything off the computer to give it to your brother.

So: When the computer is running,

1. click the black Apple icon on the top left, and select About This Mac. From the info that is displayed, please post the version of Mac OS X and the Memory.

2. click More Info, and read the right hand side to get the Model Identifier.

3. Put the OS 10.6 disk in, and double click the icon. Is there an X displayed on any of the icons that appear?

OK!

The last point: the big X is to tell you that this installer is not going to work on your Mac.

Is the computer connected to the internet? If it is, you probably could install OS 10.7, and in the process wipe the hard drive. If you do that your brother will get a Macbook with 10.7 installed, nothing else, and ready to go.

Do you want to do that?

where would I go to install the OS 10.7?

You download it from the App Store. Costs $20. To log in to the App store use your Apple id and password - the same as what you use to log in to these discussions.

App Store is in your Applications folder. Double click it and follow the directions.

10.7 will download, and ask you where you want to install it. Ask the installer to erase the drive and then install.

This takes a while to do.
