What am I doing wrong?

What am I doing wrong? I just purchased Snow Leopard MacOS X to reinstall on my Macbook Pro 15in. I want to erase my hard drive but it's not working. I'm doing the steps as outlined in the manual but when I restart all I get is the grey screen then the apple logo. I've waited for 5 minutes and then had to force quit.

Is there some small step that I'm missing? I apologize in advance if I have posted this inthe wrong forum.

According to www.everymac.com, this is your model Mac. It's the only 15" Core i5 model with that size screen and a 2.4 GHz CPU.

Note that it came with 10.6.3. While the retail disk you purchased is the same point release, it doesn't support your Mac. In order to install Snow Leopard, you need the bundled gray disks it came with. If you can't find them, you'll need to order exact replacement disks from Apple.

Call Apple's customer service and let them know you need replacement disks. They will ask for the serial number to make sure you get the correct ones. Once you have the disks, then you'll be able to boot to the DVD, erase the drive and install Snow Leopard. Apply all available updates to bring it up to 10.6.8. Make sure to give the disks to new owner of the Mac and make it clear they should not be thrown away, or someone, someday will be in the same position. They will not be able to put the Mac back to its factory state.

As for Lion, you can't install that on a computer you're giving away or selling. If the new owner ever needs to boot to the recovery partition to reinstall any of Apple's "download only" versions of OS X, it will ask for the App Store ID of the user who purchased the OS before it will proceed (even the free Mavericks OS). Meaning they won't be able to reinstall Lion without logging in with your ID and password. You wouldn't want to give anyone else that information since they could then purchase any number of apps on your ID and credit card. Personally, I'd get a refund on Lion.
