My Magic Trackpad stops working

Since a while, my magic trackpad stops working. The bluetooth menu says it is still connected (and with 44% battery life). Pressing the button on the right side of the trackpad doesn't make the device come back. From system preferences, trackpad, choosing Setup Bluetooth Trackpad does make the trackpad work again. Changing the batteries also works, but I didn't get any warnings about the batteries being empty.

In Console.app I found the following:

26-02-14 21:40:16,000 kernel[0]: [BNBTrackpadDevice][waitForData][28-37-37-2d-5c-9f] Timeout waiting for data

but I don't know how to interpret this.

Is this a software issue, or is the trackpad just broken?

I've started having this problem of my trackpad suddenly not responding only since I installed Maverics about a month ago. The only thinkg I've done to restore it is to shut down and reboot. My batteries are just about half level, and shouldn't be the problem. I don't have any other 'magic' devices other than my keyboard. This is very annoying, and I haven't discovered any phyme or reason to why it goes out when it does.

This problem just happened to me for the first time on October 12, 2014. I have a mid 2007 iMac, and I've had a Magic Trackpad for quite a few years, and never had a problem. About a month ago, I upgraded to Mavericks, and the trackpad still worked fine. I only use it as a NumPad, because I use a wireless keyboard and I need the NumPad for Finale™ notation entry. I also use a Magic Mouse, which I use to navigate. After my trackpad stopped responding, I changed the batteries, and connected with Bluetooth. There were a few flashes indicating there was a connection, but after 30 or 45 minutes, I gave up. I always shut down the computer at night. When I booted up this morning, the trackpad worked fine. So maybe the solution is to Restart the computer. Also, the battery strength is now 100% in the trackpad. I don't know what the battery strength was when the trackpad stopped working yesterday. My guess is that the trackpad does not play well with Mavericks unless the battery strength is strong. I almost dread the upcoming Yosemite…

Mine is similar. I have a MacBook Pro. Even before Yosemite upgrade I have been having this problem where my trackpad just disconnects. Bluetooth settings say it is disconnected. Won't reconnect. Sometimes just clicking with it or the like will bring it back. Sometimes I use a regular USB mouse and eventually the trackpad will just reconnect on it's own.

I read some of the other posts. I have disabled the wake from bluetooth device option. I also banged it on my palm a few times. Then just quickly (and just barley) loosened the battery port and retightened and it connected again.

It doesn't happen consistently. This is bad for me when it looses connection during a WebEx class that I am giving.

I will update later on if any of these things seem to improve my situation.

All -

I had a similar problem with a USB mouse on a brand new MAC Mini. I switched to a wired USB keyboard and mouse and continued to have the same problem. After the computer went to sleep, upon wake the mouse would work for several seconds, then stop working, then start again, etc...

I started unplugging stuff and noticed I had two monitors connected to the computer. One via HDMI and another through the thunderbolt port using a VGA adapter. I removed the VGA adapter and the problem went away. It could be the third party adapter caused grief. I will do some more testing, but just some food for thought for others having the issue.

So, here is what works for me...

1) First, make sure bluetooth on from the computer

2) The press and hold side trackpad power button and wait for the light to flash and then not respond, once there is no response let go (turns it off)

3) Go to the trackpad system preferences and "Setup Up Bluetooth Trackpad"

3) Now press and hold down side trackpad power button again, it should flash periodically... once the screen says it found the track pad DO NOT let go of the button and use the computer touch pad to click on connect button

4) it should hopefully connect and you can let go of the side trackpad power button.

It works for me like this each time... and I do have to do this whenever the computer loses the connect.

Any thoughts?

I am not sure why lichenit's solution (03/11/2015) doesn't have more votes. It's the only one that has worked for me every single time without having to restart my computer. (On a side note, if you have several windows open while following the steps, a pop-up window asking to confirm you want to pair the trackpad with the computer may be hidden behind and you could wait forever without realizing Mac OS is waiting for your response.)
