Let's try a different approach. Let's say there's an AU effect that does DJ scratches. How would you use it?

Good DJs do the scratches, as desired, in time, during breaks, etc. An entire song doesn't go

::scratch::::scratch::::scratch::::scratch::::scratch::::scratch::::scratch::::s cratch::

more like

{Cranking bass line} {Break} {Silence} ::scratch:: ::scratch:: {Crashing synths and bass}

So how would you use a scratch effect

What effects are you looking at?

To add effects to an instrument or a track, open the Track Info pane by clicking on the 'i' in the lower right corner. Then click the disclosure triangle at the bottom of the pane to expand the details. This is where you add in effects.

As a side note: If you want something to sound like vinyl iZotope has a great free plugin.

Some of the Drum kits in Jam Pack 2 Remix Tools have some sounds within those parameters, like vinyl noise, or wiki wiki, and other sounds of the Genre.

Big Beat Remix has vinyl noise at C6
Classic Hip Hop Remix has some scratchin and beat box sounds all around C6 Classic House Remix house wiki scratchin and stuff a few keys up from C5
You have to play around in various the drum sets from that Jam Pack to find them. Those drum sets in JP2 are a lot of fun.

Also you will find a lot of SoundFonts online with scratchin effects. I have a whole bunch I made now in preset folders. Often many of the effects were included in the Soundfonts that include large sets of instruments and sounds.

I'm still searching for something that will let me scratch in GB like you can with a turntable.

Maybe I'm missing something here, but what exactly would one use a turn table effect for? In GB an effect affects an entire track's worth of regions. The Vinyl effect, for example (as mentioned above) adds clicks and scratches to an entire track so that it sounds like it's being played from a record. I just can't imagine how a "scratch" effect would work, or why you'd even want it.

Now a turn table instrument makes lots of sense, and again, as was mentioned, JP3 comes with such an instrument so that you can add scratches and such.

So am I missing something here, or is this a search for something that doesn't exist, and would be useless even if it did exist?

Same way you would use a synthesizer.

I thought Al elliot was talking about an Audio Unit Effect, something that you select as an Audio unit that could take an Aiff file or a WAV file and manipulate it as you might with a real turntable in a manner you wish, sometime during the course of your song. Much the way you would use a synthesizer in a manner you like during the course of a song.

I have an AU called Turntablist 1.1 that almost does the trick but I can't get it to work in a defining manner with GB. The site states the DL as a VST but I believe the package contains the AU that I have also.

Here is the description:

scratching
Turntablist is a record scratching emulation instrument that was originally developed by bioroid media development.

Another AU that almost gets the job done is Musolomo.

I can't find a way to manage the controls in GB.

Now if you could find an AU that could load a sample and allow you to use that sample as an instrument the way a turntabilist scratches with a vinyl turntable you could use it in your song. Then you wouldn't have to use already made scratch loops or soundfonts and you could control your own sound.

I just thought Al was talking about a Plugin I guess. Something you could load a waveform into and manipulate. There are Synth plugins now that do that in GB where you don't have to use a waveform from a running track. I'm pretty sure the day is coming to allow turnabilst scratching with the mouse wheel. or the MOD wheel on a keyboard. If I where a programmer I'd make one myself!

the only reason i was calling it an effect was because of what i read in apple's description of the Jam Pack... "Turntable effects let you add scratching, needle drops, and other sonic flavors to your mix." this was copied and pasted. but you're saying that there IS no "Turntable effects..." right? i'm inclined to agree... i thought i wasn't able to find them... i guess they aren't there... that still begs the question... what is apple talking about in the description of jam pak?

The turntable effects that the quote is talking about are the loops and the instances on the drum kit (that Hang was talking about).

It doesn't actually take your song and scratch it but it does add the "effect" of having the song scratched...or needle-dropped....or other sonic flavors. With a little bit of experimenting, you can make your song sound like it's being scratched by dropping the loops in well placed areas in the song.
