AppleTV has no standard display zoom controls.
It is likely your TV aspect ratio or zoom setting is set to 'zoom' or 'stretch' or similar.
Same problem. How should it be set?
16:9 if Auto doesn't work
I have a Panasonic Viera plasma. It works perfectly and has a beautiful picture with ATT Uverse HD. I don't know why my TV settings would not work with my Apple TV. I really have not delved into the Panasonic TV settings however.
I have, though, worked with the settings in the Apple TV menu under "TV Resolution." How are these different from the zoom controls you mention? My TV picture is stretched horizontally if I choose Auto or 1080p HD or 720p HD. The only settings that give me the proper full view of th screen are either 480p 60 or 640 x 480. But these settings do not seem to give me an HD picture.
I am confused. Thanks.
ATT Uverse would be on another input. Did you check your TV settings when using Apple TV to make sure it's set to 16:9?
I will try to figure out how to do that. We had someone rig up a Harmony remote on our system when we bought the Panasonic TV and they setup the TV at the same time. I'll have to find my actual Panasonic TV remote. My TV is not atually wall mounted, but it is very close to the wall and it will be very difficult to see on the back which input the Apple TV is using. I guess when I get into the TV settings menu it will become apparent. Thanks.
You would have to set the TV to the correct input in order to use/view the Apple TV interface. There is no need to look at the back of your Panasonic set. Refer to your TV manual if unsure how to access it's settings.
OK. Just to be clear I am able to use/view the Apple TV interface already.
Yes I know. My point was, in order to view it your TV would have to be set to the correct input, so there is no need to look at the back of your TV to see where Apple TV is plugged in.
When you are viewing the Apple TV interface, that is when you would be checking your Panasonic's settings to ensure it is set to 16:9
Would the Panasonic's settings for 16:9 be "universal" across all the HDMI inputs, or is there a setting for the aspect ratio for each input independently? If you do not know the Panasonic in particular, then what would be typical? I feel that I know more, although not very much more, about using and trouble shooting my Mac than I do about A-V systems!
I long for the day when Apple actually does come out with the much rumored iTV that Steve wished for. I hope there is actually one in the works!
P.S. I did find a PDF of my Panasonic user manual and it is not clear if there is a separate aspect ratio setting for each input or if it is system wide.
The aspect ratio would be set for each input independently.
Should I put the setting in the Apple TV "TV Resolution" setting on "auto" first and then make sure the Panasonic TV setting is on 16:9? Thanks.

Set AppleTV to Auto - it will choose the best resolution your TV can handle.
Find the Panasonic plasma remote and change the Aspect ratio setting to Auto or 16:9.
Your Uverse box may have separate output settings which can be configured.
I have two Panasonic plasmas and AppleTVs work fine with them. The TVs aspect ratio settings really only cause issues of image distortion if set to anything but Auto or 16:9 if using widescreen sources. If you are watching old 4:3 content on any device accept the black bars at the sides and don;t zoom as it will either distort horizontally or clip the top/bottom.
Thanks! I finally got it done with your help. I've got the Apple TV set to Auto. I have a simple button on my Panasonic remote that is called "format." It cycles through the following settings: full, h-fill, just, 4:3 and zoom. Full is the one that works for both my Uverse channels and for Apple TV. Uverse's input was already set on Full but apparently Apple TV's input was on one of the other settings that caused the screen to stretch horizontally. I'm assuming that Full is probably 16:9 but I don't know for sure. Anyway, it works!
Thanks,
Steve M.
P.S. I also had to do a restore on my 3rd gen Apple TV after having a bad result installing the recent update. The restore through iTunes worked fine so I'm back in business now.
Great - just checked my UK remotes and they say 'Aspect' but presumably the same as your format settings.
