[Mavericks Update Issue] Power button does not put computer to sleep.
After the newest update I can no longer put my iMac to sleep with the power button. Anyone else experiencing this?

This worked on my 2009 iMac! Thank you, I was so frustrated with this change in functionality. Holding button down for longer than the quick 1/2 count does bring up the shutdown/sleep/restart menu so those of you trying this make sure to release quickly after quick 2 count
I'm also experiencing this.
I have a MacBook Pro (running Mavericks), and after the last update, the power button no longer put my mac to sleep. And I guess, it is taking longer than usual to show the shut down menu, when holding it.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5869. But note that the duration might have changed w/10.9.2. I can't test, since I don't have a laptop and I've never used the power button to sleep my iMac, only to shut it down.
It's about a 2 second press of the button to put it to sleep. The momentary tap or hold time span was altered with this OS.

As Pappasbike says. I presume that Apple attended to the many complaints from Macbook and Air users who were accidentally hitting the button when hitting the Delete or Eject button. It was too sensitive as compared to Mountain Lion, Lion, Snow Leopard etc.
Pete
I guess the question is solved.
Thanks!
You can also hold down the CTRL key as you press the power button, and this brings up the shutdown menu instantly.
It is now press power and hold for a quick 1, 2 count to go right to sleep.
I hadn't done a lot of accidental presses to sleep but enough that this will be a fine compromise.
Sorry, people. I used to press the power button and my retina MBP went to sleep. Very nice. Now I press the power button, for 1, 2 count, or whatever, and I get the whole choice (sleep, shut down, turn-into-a pumpkin). Any way I can get back to my old default? (apologies to "Macbook and Air users who were accidentally hitting the button when hitting the Delete or Eject button")

None that I'm aware of. BTW, if http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5869 is no longer viable, File a bug report with Apple. for lost functionality.
Hey sorry, I should have been more clear - hold for a quick one/two count BUT release before the options menu comes up. It's working for me, hopefully that'll do it for you.
I don't know what you have against poetry, antipoet, but you're right about the very "quick one/two count" (I see you're a boxer, not a poet). It's annoying—your timing has to be just right; but it did just work for me.

Jarrod- You can turn off this new sleep feature and restore the shutdown/sleep dialog box to pop up when you press the power button.
In Terminal copy & paste in the following command and then press enter:
defaults write com.apple.loginwindow PowerButtonSleepsSystem -bool no
The strange thing is that my iMac at work doesn't have this issue. I hold the power button for a quick 1, 2, release and the puts the screen to sleep, but for some reason this doesn't work with my iMac at home.
I'm afraid that command didn't do anything for me.
