Q: What does this Kernel Panic report mean? What can I do?

Hi,

I've had my MacBook (Late 2013 Retina 15" MacBook Pro) crash a few times, resulting in a kernel panic. I know a fair share about software, programming, website but I know absolutely nothing about crashing, etc.. All I know is that it crashed very suddenly, resulting in a grey screen talling me a Kernel Panic had occurred.

I was hoping someone could make anything out from this? I saw current thread was 'Skype' but I wasn't using it at the time, it was just in the background. This has happened before and I may not have been using it then. (It's not set to open at boot.) I was using a weather app ("Living Earth") at the moment it crashed but I only installed that yesterday and it's crashed before then.

Here's the Kernel Panic Report from /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports.

As I say, it's happened a few times before (twice recently but also a while ago).

I'd be really thankful if anyone could share some light on this.

I have noticed this. One time it crashed when using a video app such as VLC, and another time when changing desktops between an app playing a video and say Skype or Google Chrome (I can't be sure which).

Here's some more information about my Mac if it helps:

    Operating System: OS X 10.9.2 (Mavericks) 13C64

Model: Apple Late 2013 Retina MacBook Pro 15"

Processor: 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7

    Memory: 16GB 1600MHz DDR3

    Graphics: Intel Iris Pro 1024MB

I've noticed that my case is similar to some people's in this thread.

It looks as if it might be a GPU glitch - you have the model with the Intel Iris Pro 5200 GPU, correct?

If it's crashing when you open apps that are graphics intensive (VLC, Skype and Chrome all can strain a GPU) then I think that your problem is defintely the graphics card. If I were you, I would print out the kernel panic log and take the machine to your local Apple Store for testing. You should still be under warranty...

I do indeed have the Intel Iris Pro 5200. And I am luckily under a three year warranty.

I'll see how frequent the crashes occur and if there's a patch any time soon. If it continues, I'll take your advise and take it to my local Apple Store.

Hopefully, they'll release a patch soon if it's a driver fault.

    Dan,

If I were you, I wouldn't wait for any potential 'patch' - there may or may not be an EFI update for your model at sometime in the future but as far as OS X, 10.9.2 was just released after several months of beta testing so I'm not expecting to see a 10.9.3 anytime soon...

I simply can't stand for something new not to work properly - if it is a problem with select GPUs then I would go ahead and take it in for diagnosis. You've nothing to lose!

    Hm, I guess so.

I've just returned back to college you see but if it does continue, I'll take it down (it's a good hour away unfortunately).

    Thanks for your help.

Remove the Sophos product by following the instructions on this page. If you have a different version, the procedure may be different.

Back up all data before making any changes.

    Hi,

Is there a reason for removing Sophos? Is it linked to crashes? (I had had some other crashing issues with it when I had on-access scanning enabled but I disabled it).

    Okay, I've uninstalled it.

I was having odd kernal panics that looked basically the same.

I tested removing Soundflower which I see you also have installed and things seem stable.

The unistaller can be found with the installer at: https://code.google.com/p/soundflower/downloads/list

The uninstaller doesn't gracefully unload the kext, so I recommned:

    sudo kextunload /System/Library/Extensions/Soundflower.kext

    before running the uninstaller.

Well that was short lived, I also had Drobo Dashboard 2.5.2 installed - I just removed that as well. Lets see how this goes.

I also have the same first and last kext unload messages about:

    com.apple.driver.AppleIntelMCEReporter

I don't have Drobo Dashboard installed (although I have used a Drobo via USB w/o installing the dashboard previously). I wouldn't have thought it was that. I suspect, like many others, that it is a driver issue as many people are having the problem generally when using video or video intensive tasks.

That's the strange part - it's not doing anything intesive when it crashes it hasn't even happened when I'm even using it. I'll just come back to it sitting at the login window.

Seems to be holding strong at the moment - time will tell.
